Happy Idiot or Wise Man?

A good friend of mine asked me this very question: "Which would you rather be, a happy idiot or a wise man?" In my younger years, the latter would have been the clear response; now, decades later, I would have to go with the former.

I guess if you don't mind the consequences that come with foolishness. I myself would rather walk an easier path.

This is hindsight and nothing special. What matters is how you deal with becoming a wise man. It's not easy and not even especially recommended and we can all long for younger, stupider days ... but that does no one any good, yourself included.
So, bitter wise man who takes no action and refuses to hope?
Or active, working wise man who shares his hard-won wisdom and does his bit?
Swami, I would say you fall into the latter category because you're not afraid to share what you know and how you think and in the end it helps everyone here, whether we agree with you or not.
Kudos!

i'd rather be myself than a grinning-giggling monkey faced guru, mr. weckman, the head of my philosophy department when i was in college, or bugs bunny and donald the duck. not that i don't see something about myself in each of them, but... as they say, life oscillates between chaos and form - try on a form, use it - know it - discard it, then from chaos make a new form - repeat the cycles as often as possible to feel alive and free.... mmm....who said that, anyways? bah, i've never been good at giving a conventional answer to those kind of questions..... 'cuz it always seems like i'm forced to pick the lesser of two things i don't want, in which case i'd really rather not be at all.
-------------------- Everything is better than it was the last time. I'm good. If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care. It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence. I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too. If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

that is so damn true, lol. i used to think if you were wise, you had to hate life, cuz it was such an ugly thing.... but now that i think of it, there is no way to be a wise man, without being a happy wise man. everything that has happened, has happened. i have come to the realization that there is more to life than i will ever know. i cant be ignorant of it. and if i have to make a choice, i'd rather be happy, knowing that its all so infinitely complex in a beautiful way :-)

I'd rather be a happy fucking moron, and although I'm only 22, the "older" I get the more I realize how much harder this is going to make it

Shit happens, whether you're wise or not. At least if you're wise you have a better idea of how to deal with shit when it happens.

If you only knew my other side... I might've made the papers today (as "Father Jive").
While it's true that I, too, write in blood... I only draw it from the one arm. I save the rest for my antics. hehehe

One making that distinction may not be as wise as he thinks.
