Ultrasonic humidifier
    #12222387 - 03/18/10 01:40 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Quick question. I kno that using an ultrasonic humidifier doesnt provide the air circulation the cool mist does, but i wanted to know if my little FC setup will work. At first i had a TIT set up, which i stupidly neglected for a few days and most of my pins aborted. So i Drilled a few holes and put in an airstone underneath the 3 in of perlite. Did ok, but not great. Now i have the same set up with an ultrasonic humidifier that runs on a medium/low setting and a comp fan that blows on the outside of the FC. Theres about 6 1/4 in holes on the short sides of the fc, about 12 on the long sides, and about 10 on top. about 5 on the bottom too. So far, seems to be working fine, but i like getting opinions from more experienced mycologists. thanks in advance

how is the humidifier situated with respect to the FC?

it sounds like you might need more holes... do you use polyfill or similar?

your setup could work with some tweaking, but ultrasonics are difficult to use with smaller spaces. you might want to consider some method of reducing the precipitation, such as coiling a hose, or piping into bottles first, etc.

well theres a nob on it that alows me to change how much "precipitation" comes out. the lowest setting doesnt fill up the FC with the thick fog like humidity. but the settin i use does eventually fill up the fc with the "precipitation" but since the fan is running, it never its real foggy in there. my holes like i said are only about a 1/4 in. big with no polyfill. about the size of the ones in RR shotgun tek. any suggestions on how long i should have both running? and at if they should be on at the same time or not thanks

I was wondering how the humidifier is "hooked up" to the FC. those holes with no polyfill should be giving you adequate FAE. but there is a delicate balance between FAE and humidity. I would recommend blocking some holes, or polyfilling all of them. tweak it a little every day until you can find a happy medium.

an ultrasonic should be creating puddles in a tub style FC, at least it did when I had a similar setup. what I believe is happening to you is that the fan is dissipating all your humidity.

another option would be to leave the holes as they are and take the fan out of the equation.

i feel like if i take the fan out it wont get enough FAE and the ultrasonic fog will be too much for my poor little babys because that fog for some reason without the comp fan doesnt want to leave the FC.
