Use VPN but sometimes ...
    #12197539 - 03/13/10 09:42 PM (14 years, 18 days ago)

Due to where I live I have to use VPN to access all the wonderful goodies the internet has to offer (porn, YouTube & FB mostly). Every so often though, I see an automated message that is addressed to my actual location (Asia), not the one I am ostensibly at (today, WA state).

This screen shot references my actual location.

This screen shot was taken at the same time, and it gives the location of my VPN.

My questions are, if some porn site can detect where I actually am, what about the gov't? I don't like to make my internet activities too public and this has me slightly concerned. Is VPN as safe as I thought it was? Is there anything else I can do to prevent spying eyes from knowing my location and possibly my activities?

Well, anyone that gets your IP address can find your location, they all trace back to specific locations.

whatismyip.com, find your IP
maxmind.com enter it here, it tells you where you are.

This isn't too accurate though, your IP will likely change around with others on your exchange. They can't really get any more accurate than town level.

The government on the other hand, could contact your ISP, and (with relevant warrants etc.) either get a telephone number, and address, from an IP at a specific time. Or get a list of IP's your telephone number has held, and when.

If you don't want to be traced, you are looking for anonymous proxies, just google it, you might get lucky and find a working one. You can usually buy anonymous proxies too.

If you can't be bothered with that, use an anonymous-browser, like http://www.ninjacloak.com/ http://hidemyass.com/

Use something like http://privacy.net/analyze-your-internet-connection and http://www.leader.ru/cgi-bin/go?who

There are a lot of tricks that can be used to figure out where you are other than your IP address.  Looking at things your browser reports, such as local timezone, local time, languages accepted, etc, can all help narrow down geographic location.  Turn off Java if you have it enabled.

Thanks for the links, I'll check 'em out. But my main concern isn't what to do IF they want to find me. Their gov't helped hacked google, not much I can do to protect myself against that kind of computing prowess. My concern is them stumbling across me and then deciding to follow up. I just want to slip under the radar. If they don't know I am here, they won't look for me. I am worried about this seeing these pop up messages that address my actual location have.

Is VPN as secure as I thought it was?

It really depends what you're doing...

You aren't going to "slip under the radar" because an IP address is still going to be doing, whatever you're doing (what the hell are you doing? :P)

If they want to find out who that is, they would notice its a proxy of some sort, and with enough warrants can trace it back (most public places are going to keep logs of who connects, and what they do, to save their own asses) - though the online browser proxy things are unlikely to.

I guess the best way would to be constantly switching proxies... But really, I wouldn't be that fussed. I know carders that don't bother with proxies, and they get away fine.. so unless you're hacking into some government stuff, nobody cares

Somehow, I think this is just a ruse. Hmmmm. Maybe some sort of duplicitous advertising technique. See, there are no white girls where I live.

VPN is very secure if it is properly configured.  What is not secure is your browser.  Depending upon what you have enabled, I can tell a whole lot about you when you visit my site, even if you are going through an anonymous proxy or VPN.  For example, with Java, I can tell your local IP address, even if you are browsing through a proxy.

VPN is definitely secure but I believe the ad that you are referring to might be tracing your cookies or something. If you are in Asia and you have checked your email or any other website which gives a hint of where you actually are, then you might get this sort of ad.. This is my personal viewpoint and I may be wrong but you can double check it by clearing your cache, not using your email n stuff and then check the same webiste. Does it still show you the ad near to your location??
Do let me know. I am really interested in finding out why this is happening
