The stew pot will work, I usually put a washcloth or hand towel on the bottom. It keeps the jars from making contact with the bottom of the pot - and - it appears to keep the sloshing from the boiling down also.

The bottom fell out of my mind. My eyes turned inside out, my feet began to leak out the top of my head. The room folded flat around me, spun around, shifted out of existence and left me sliding into my own navel.

Cut a peice of autoclavable plastic or metal that will fit in the pot. Throw some marbles in the pot and put the metal over the marbles.Whalla now the jars wont make contact with the bottom

good idea bro, I just used two small towels and it worked perfectly, except one jar tipped over because of an air bubble...

that's a damn good idea, i'm gonna have to try that. i get tired of having to use mommies good dish towels in the bottom of my pc. lol. (she really hates it) and having to grab them from the bottom of the pot feeling like wet bread dough. and the damn oatmeal stinch!

i'm definately gonna try the marbles thing.

how can i tell if something is autoclavable without going to the store to buy one. i mean, would it be common to have autoclavable material that is just lying around the house and not even know it?
is it ok for the jars to touch the sides of the pc, like around the top?
