One of My Neighbors just lost a Rooster *Update!*
    #12140992 - 03/04/10 10:15 AM (14 years, 27 days ago)

How do I know?
Because my dog had it pinned down on the front porch.
I heard an AWFUL noise and went to check it out.
It scared the dog, she let go of it and then it tried to attack me through the screen/glass door.

I don't know what the hell that's all about...
I hope she didn't go run up in their yard and take the damn thing

I hope you disciplined your dog man. It's very bad to have an animal thats killing neighbors livestock. He could get shot next time.

QFT.

That's either someone's livestock or pet. Either way I'd be pissed if my neighbor's dog got it.

So what is he s'posed to do? Spank his dog and ground it from going outside?

You can't punish prey-drive. Messkins shouldn't let their birds run loose.

Yes you can! Especially with dogs. Maybe invest in a shock collar? Thats what we used on the farm I rode at to keep some younger dogs from running after horses and chickens. You may even have to spank your dog around a bit. I don't mean beat it, but hit his nose or assert your dominance. If he were in a pack of dogs his discipline for wrong doing would be a lot worse.

How the hell do you think dogs can be trained to protect young calves from other large canines and mountain lions?

Dogs have been used to protect all kinds of livestock for a long, long time. If your dog can't be trained to stop killing chickens or small animals then he will be shot by someone. Thats just the way it is. You can't let an animal do that.

Even cats can be taught not to kill small animals, of course this has to be done early on in life but it IS possible.

I'm pretty sure the gates were shut, so the rooster probably came to our yard or something.
I can't exactly discipline the dog when the rooster tries to attack me...

We live on a farm and the nearest neighbor is quite a way away anyhow.
And the dog doesn't bother the cattle. Usually only hunts rabbits too

I'm just real confused right now.
But I'm gonna wait til my husband gets home and let him figure it out!

I don't feel like rooster fighting this morning

SHIT. I just noticed that my husband left the gate open when he left for work this morning.

I don't know how our neighbor's dog didn't beat my dog's ass for going over there tho...

And there's a bird flying around on our indoor porch!

It's birds gone wild today!

Chickens are delicious. I say you should eat the rooster. Be sure to share some with the dog though, he found it first.

Catching birds is very difficult, especially roosters because of their spurs.

When your husband gets home get a sheet and try to throw it over the chicken. This should subdue him for a few seconds which gives you enough time to grab him. Very carefully and gently wrap the sheet around his legs so if he does fight, he doesn't shred you to bits. You may have to carry him upside down. Try to get to the neighbours house asap to let the bird go. As long as the sheet isn't too tight around his head, he should be fine with air until you get to the neigbors house depending on distance and shit.

We did this whenever our piegon would fly away and get in bad situations (ie running down Lincoln Rd in Miami) so your success with a bird like a rooster might be different.

I figured OP lived in the city and had somebody keepin' chickens nearby (like me).

My point was that one can't discipline a dog like one would discipline a child.

Two completely different animals. Shock collars? Seems a bit much, although I've only had experience with the ones that keep 'em from barking.

Dogs hardly ever need to be touched, only in extreme hierarchy disruptions.

But yeah catchin' a rooster good luck with that lol

Well if its a minor shock or getting kicked by horse or shot, I think shock collars are the better choice for breaking vices.

Though this one time, my trainer's dog was chasing a big horse who was getting pissed off and kicking out. I yelled for the dog to come to me but he ignored me. I grabbed the remote control for the collar and pressed bottom button. I had the remote upside down. I heard the dog yelp and fall down. I accidentally hit maximum shock. I felt so bad!! Hahaha

hmmm... yea, my husband hates roosters cuz of how mean they can get.

And this one is a pretty big ol boy!
I'm sure he's gonna be pleased with the dog...
I had to call him so he'd be on guard when he got here.
I hope the damn thing's still alive!!!

Or we got some serious 'splainin to do

Oh well, in some cultures they keep the well behaved dogs and eat the bad ones. At least we give 'em a chance.

Maybe the dog and the rooster should go in the pot?  :stirthepot:

Oh I felt really bad. He never chased horses again when I was there though. Haha

I held him (smaller dog, which made me feel worse) and pet him. Made him sit, then I gave him a treat. It was still a pretty comical thing to see.

Nah, we don't do the shock collar thing.
She just gets spankings when she does somethin awful.
And then she pouts and won't play with my husband for all of 3 minutes.
Then she's right back up his ass again.

We were thinkin about getting chickens soon too.
So, gonna have to rethink that idea.
Either get rid of the dog or make it to where she can't get in there with them

Man... what a way to wake up this morning.

My neighbors are gonna be pissed.
