is this ill advisable?
if so why?

i read somewhere that water evaporating off the cakes is a big pinning trigger so i figures mist then put in sunlight

Yeah natural sunlight is good. Mist+fan. I dont see why letting them sit for hours in a sunlit room would be a problem as long as you have good fae and you keep them hydrated.

Its not so much direct sunlight that you have to worry about but the temperatures that it creates. Temperatures are taken in the shade. When its say 70 degrees outside, its really hotter than that because it was taken in the shade. Since mycelium thermal death is at 106 degrees F, direct sunlight can reach that temperature easily.

I have my reishi in a place where sunlight streaks across the room. Since moving the reishi to this spot they get a few minutes a day of direct sunlight they have taken off.

Indirect sunlight works. Keep em out of direct light. Like the others said. Possibility of thermal overload.

their is no benefit whatsoever from direct sunlight.
If mushrooms grow in your yard, which ones grow bigger? The ones on the lawn, or the ones in the shade?
-------------------- "It's that in me there is no sorcery, there is no anger, there are no lies. Because I don't have garbage, I don't have dust. The sickness comes out if the sick vomit. They vomit the sickness. They vomit because the mushrooms want them to. If the sick don't vomit, I vomit. I vomit for them and in that way the malady is expelled. The mushrooms have power because they are the flesh of God. And those that believe are healed. Those that do not believe are not healed."(Maria Sabina) "Then there are the fanatical atheists whose intolerance is the same as that of the religious fanatics, and it springs from the same source . . . They are creatures who can't hear the music of the spheres." (Albert Einstein)

direct sunlight is a huge pinning trigger alone,
think in nature as the mycellium crests out of its dung or earth substrate or whatever and is hit by sunlight, that mycellium then begins to pin
RR has said this many times before

Why worry about nature's way in the first place.I have found that the best pin sets have come from a small amount of direct sun.As already mentioned ,...not too long as thermal overload could happen, just make sure as it evaporates you are misting as well, plus fanning ,unless you are outdoors and have breeze for FAE. Why worry about the sun/UV when that is the "natural" habitat of cubes and we are trying to mimic nature. I agree with pscientist,I believe that the cube derives energy from light, and I find the sun to be unmatched, however ,that is not to say I don't rely on my old blue" (aquarium flouro). If you ever have trouble getting a sub to pin, bathe in the sun, depending on your temps/climate,use common sense for exposure time.
