Ash Wednesday
    #12059231 - 02/19/10 10:18 AM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Was out and about Wednesday and noticed tons of people with smudges on their foreheads. Ah, yes - more Roman Catholic silliness.

What was it I said in a thread a few weeks back about how people are proud of their irrationality? Case in point.

At first I thought people had the harry potter thing on their forehead, upon closer inspection i noticed that they had perhaps fallen into a fireplace

I haven no idea what the hell the point of that thing is either.

a guy that used to work at the desk next to me is hugely into Catholicism.  he was pumped about ash wednesday to say the least.  i can hardly stand talking to the guy anymore bcuz everything he talks about comes down to god.  whenever we would talk philosophy, i knew what he was going to say before he would even say it so long as i knew the pope's position on the issue and, of course, the pope could never be wrong about something.

Most people I know are catholic but nobody really follows it. It's just what people are born into IME.

Catholics are very confused people.  Ever sit down with one and ask probing questions about what they believe.  The resulting reply is a hodgepodge of irrationality and nonsense.

This thread is full of gross generalizations and meaningless banter... I mean who really gives a fuck if people want to practice certain rituals? All Catholics are irrational and all psychedelic-users are drug addicts, right?

I thought that is kind of cool that the ash is put in the location of the pineal gland, similar to the dot (poutu I think?) worn in the Hindu religion.

Catholicism uses legitimate symbolism but the original meaning of the symbols has become corrupted.

My pineal gland is not on the surface of my skin. YMMV.

I've found the best way to approach these people is with confusion.  Ask what the smudge is for.  When they tell you, say, "That sure is an interesting custom" and walk away, never speaking to them again.

A very huge percentage of Catholics not only have not even heard of the pineal gland, but they also do not even have a pragmatic understanding of how the brain works; I was baptized in the Catholic church, had my first communion in the Catholic church, and was raised Catholic--trust me, I know what I'm talking about. :sadyes:

My point is that most people who follow that bizarre ritual don't even know why they're doing it, and they only do it because everybody else in their church is doing it too!

:curbyourenthusiasm: :sheepie:

They seem to put that on their forehead to proclaim their piousness, but didn't Jesus say something about worshiping in a closet where no one can see you and you can't show off?

Republican Values:

1) You can't get married to your spouse who is the same sex as you.
2) You can't have an abortion no matter how much you don't want a child.
3) You can't have a certain plant in your possession or you'll get locked up with a rapist and a murderer.

4) We need a smaller, less-intrusive government.

Yeah, almost everybody who believes in Jesus does not do so privately. :nonono:

At least they display their man-boy love in private. :shrug2:

Also not supposed to worship idols; yet millions of Catholics pray to statues.
