Exhausted Substrate as an Organic Soil Amendment?
    #11994911 - 02/09/10 12:01 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

I may ask this on the Growery too, but I thought I'd start here. Growing season will be coming eventually and my mind is already getting the pieces together. This year I want to grow completely organically, and I was wondering if all this exhausted h.poo mushroom compost would bring anything to the table. IE. nitrogen or phosphorus or anything?

Thanks a lot!

Commercial mushroom farms, sterilize their spent substrate and sell it as a soil supplement.

So yes, it's probably be beneficial to your grows.

You should run tries, before you completely rely on it, though.

yeah it should work. many plants rely on fungus to break down soil compounds to make them avaialable.

it would be a great ingrediant to add to your soil mixes to stretch out your soil farther.

spent casings in the garden all winter make excellent veggies in the summer.....

Thanks for the replies, I know it would be beneficial on some level, but I was curious if anyone happened to know what specific nutrients it contributes? Like nitrogen, phosphorus, potash (potassium), or whatever? Thanks again.

I have used in my veggie and pot gardens for years. As well as watering with my spent dunk water. I like the results and seem to have less critters around all of my babies.

Ok, allow me to rephrase. Do you guys think exhausted compost is better used as an amendment for the pot plants or spread out under the redwoods mixed with fresh compost in hopes of nabbing a few extra fruits?

I compost mine out doors. Then I use it in my potting soil I make from scratch. I also add it to my soil in my garden beds

During the composting part yes. Every once in a while a decent flush too.

Sweet. Benefit the pot plants and maybe get some shrooms. That's what I'll do then. Thanks a lot, bro.
