casing questions

i just cased a partially colonized cake. the mycelium smelled nasty. has anyone ever heard of white stringy contams? should i worry? has anyone ever had clean viable mycelium and invisible contams in the same jar?
also, does the thickness of the colonized layer matter? i quickly threw together a casing, and what i ended up with is 2 cm of verm on the bottom, 1 cm of colonized cake, and another cm of verm on top. is this ok?

Well, you mentioned that you had an uncolonized cake. Thats not usually the best way to start a casing.
This either means that you do have a contaminate, and that is why your mycelium haulted its growth, or you will have a better chance to get one because its uncolonized.
IMO, the smell of cubensis mycelium is not the best smelling stuff. It smells really bad on birdseed...almost like a very dirty, unwashed woman's genitals...

well, quite honestly, i havent ever smelled "a very dirty, unwashed woman's genitals"
the reason i cased a not fully colonized cake is cause im impatient, and with my fluctuating temps, the white fuzzy stuff(whatever it is) is colonizing slowly.

is there any differance in color with the cake and how long has it been colonizing oh an your half ass effort might be one of the reason.fluctuating temp is the shittest thing to provide during incubation

"does the thickness of the colonized layer matter?"
yes. my first attempt i used a casing layer that was too thick and ended up with contams and nothing else.
