    #11904056 - 01/26/10 08:32 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

i soaked my wbs and simmered one pot, i poured it on a t shirt so the water is removed but its not really working, do i have to simmer it? whats the point? im so bad at moisture content. i learned not to rinse after simmer. would it be fine if after the soak i just rinsed well and then jarred and pcd? the grain is like slimy.

The purpose of the soak is to hydrate the grains and let any spores on them start to germinate. Once the soak is over you boil the water for 10 min to finish hydrating the grain and kill off any of the spores that started to germinate. (it is easier to kill things that have already started to grow) Use a colander (strainer) not a shirt and shake the grains really well. The water on the grain will steam off leaving you with relatively dry (on the outside) fully hydrated grain.

Better still watch RR's rye prep video. 100% informative and you will see video you can follow step for step. (Make sure you know the bungee cord is strong before you jump off the bridge.)

I've never simmered and I've heard both positive and negative things about it..But I've never had a problem. Seems whenever I simmer AND pc the WBS bursts releasing starch. I simply soak-> rinse -> dry -> PC works for me.

Try what I said. Boil for 10 min. Then strain and shake well to evaporate the steam. The outside of the grain will be relatively dry and not slimy or wet.

There is no need to simmer ur WBS just soak it overnight
and wash it off and strain it the next day. Doesnt have to
be 100% dry either.

Also here you can find some information about preparing grain spawn. Do not forget to look at Shroomery's "Mushroom Info" archive.
And as Drevrens said RR's video is a great source.

You have to boil the grains for 10 minutes as Drevnens said and you have to strain it when it's hot. When the grains boiled, the steam easily flows from grains. If you shake the grains well, you will get the right moisture content.

I personally suggest you to use a metal strainer like this:

You won't lose any grains with such a material like that and makes your work easy. T-shirts doesn't sound sterile. Good luck.

If my and other users' suggestions won't work, just skip using WBS, buy some rye grain, watch RR's video and follow the instructions. You won't fail.
I tried to prepare some WBS substrate jars at the past but I had some problems, too. I guess it's harder to use WBS to prepare grain substrate. Also rye grains are much more cheaper than WBS.

I don't use wbs because of many varieties of seeds, use only rye. Bake 100g in an oven for 1-1.5 hour at 160celsius an then reweigh it and you'll se the initial moisture content(for me it's always between 13-15%) After that you have to compute how much water should you add to have 50% moisture content- if it's 15% you should add 70ml of water to 100g of rye. I mix it together and put it in pc without soaking or anything, and after its finished sterilizing, i just shake jars periodically 3-4 times to mix wetter kernels with the drier ones and the moisture balances by itself. I have never had dry or exploded kernels or slow growth or slime or excess water. It works just perfect for me and I wouldnt change my method although I have tried with wbs and many varieties of seeds and found this one the best. Good luck!

Someone thats not experienced could run into a problem
with busted grains and that leads to problems down the
road. I am a firm believer in keeping it simple as possible.
If you are going to do anything like this you should just simmer
for like 10-12 minutes. Dont even need to soak if you do it that
way.

WBS works just fine and is easy to work with.
It all depends on what you like to use

This is what you do. Soak ur grain overnight.

wake up the next morning and rinse it off really good.

Strain it out until theres only a couple drops coming from
the bottom.

Ur jars should be ready for PCing so load them up half way
and PC them for an hour. Let cool overnight.

DOne.

I am thinking on working on WBS again. Because when I bought it, I had very large amount of WBS so I still have more and I want to see how things go with the WBS. Can I PM you some questions if you give permission?
