 Sweet mobo-proc combo?

To the hardware savvy: Would you kindly recommend me a new motherboard/processor on newegg? I like ASUS as far as mobo's go but I'm not attached and I don't really know what's up with proc's these days. I want something fast and I want the mobo to have PCI-e(any reason not to go with PCI-e display adapters?) and SATA but I imagine that's standard for new boards. Not looking to skimp, I want something solid. My budget is -/+$300, but I'd consider adjusting up if necessary.
Who's the standard bearer for processors these days? I'm running WinXP right now. Don't do gaming really, my computer is an audio workstation. I run Sonar and multiple VST's and other apps that can be pretty resource intensive. Suggestions appreciated.

are you trying to replace the mobo and cpu?
you have to think about what speed your ram is also. it might not work in the newer boards.
also, if you swap a mobo out from under windows you will need to reinstall the OS. windows pretty much has a heart attack if you try it.

Good to know, I was wondering that. I JUST did a clean install since my last install crashed pretty hard(no data loss this time!) so it wouldn't be a huge deal to reinstall.
My RAM is a couple years old so I'd imagine I need new RAM too...what's the price these days and do you have any suggestions mobo/proc wise? I just want it to be solid under the load of my DigitalAudioWorkstation at full throttle and minimize latency.

ive been out of the hardware world for a while. most of my applications run on the linux command line so i really dont need much. im fine with a $100 shit-box deluxe on craigslist. software is where the fun is

most cities have pc recycling centers that sell p4's for almost nothing. i got one for $60.

Thanks for the tip...I checked out the local PC recycling shop's online store and they didn't even have any ghz range processors.

try calling them, what mine has on ebay and what they have in the shop is usually 2 different things.
