The Cabinet and the Casing Layer.
    #1185739 - 01/02/03 04:29 PM (21 years, 2 months ago)

My friend has built a cabinet.
The problem is though, when he puts his casings into the cabinet they dry out very quickly. When conditions are optimal, how long should it take for a casing layer to dry out?

details:
poo/pf cakes two inches thick in an aluminum bread pan
cased with an inch of 50/50+
The cabinet RH stays in the 85-95 range

The only thing that I can think of is that there is too much airflow from the humidifier. If you want more details about the cabinet,  follow this link.

His next idea is to hang a piece of Plexiglass underneith the shelve that the humidifier is on so that the tubes don't blow directly on the shelves, but will instead hit the Plexiglass and flow around the sides. He doesn't know if that will cause any other problems though. I'll post the results.

Any input would be greatly appreciated as he has been tweaking this cabinet for awhile now.

Also, he noticed that the shrooms that are growing in the cabinet seem to go albino. He is using a blue "create-a-light" string that you can see if you follow the link. We're kinda assuming that there are frequencies of light that are missing like in the black-light tests that may be causing this, however it may also be because of the lack of water. What are your thoughts?

if your humidity is actually in that range the casings shouldn't be drying out too fast. how fast is real very quickly, by the way?

how air-tight is that container? if you've got the humidifier running 24/7 and your casings still dry out, the doors must let through a lot of air.

as for light and albino-ism, i don't know. i just turn on the overhead light.

doesn't really sound like anyone needs to do your thinking for you. try what you've suggested and post the results. I am currently constructing a humidity chamber somewhat similar to yours. I don't plan on routing the humidifier output tho. I'm going to place a washing machine tray on the floor, place a perlite tub on that which is under a 4shelf rack also within the washer tray. A pvc/plastict "tent" will be constructed around this. Tyvek "windows" will be placed in the plastic for gas exchange. I was considering placing plexiglass dripshields ala MMGG above each shelf. Inside will also be a digital humidity controled humidifier, a hand mister (cool-mist variety), humidity guage, thermometer and Xmas lights. The floor is concrete. I don't think that routing the humidifier output isn't that great of an idea (at least not directing it across your fruiting beds). Altho, I have no suggestions for proper air routing since I haven't figured that out for myself yet either. I plan on tapping my HEPA filter's output and using that as a fresh air input to the chamber that would create a small positive pressure and push the air around a bit in there. I have considered using an air pump to push CO2 out from the bottom. Hope some bit of that helped . 2 heads are usually better than 1.

do you ever mist your casing layer???

might want to reduce the air flow from the humidifyer, put it on a timer maybe.

I really don't know but you'll have to experiment.. i'll be facing the same challenge soon, so i'll report my findings!

I swear it's air-tight.
every seam on the doors is sealed using weather stripping, and the doors are pulled tight using window latches, so it compressed the weather-stripping.

I've read in other posts that people have had problems when leaving their humidifiers/air pumps on 24-7... This is probably my problem.

Sigh.

He mists twice daily now. However he was shooting for automation though so that all air (save when he is flushing) comes in filtered. If he has to open the chamber every day, that's letting in a lot of unfiltered air, and defeating the purpose.

Hmm... airtight???

If it's airtight, how does the humidifyer push humid air in? You do NEED air flow!

Humid air in, stale air out!! or your casing layers are providing that 85% and your himidifyer is simply not working at all?????

just a thought!!

ok... sorry. Except for the designed passage of air... It's airtight. There's an intake at the top, and an exhaust fan at the bottom. The exhaust has a cover over the vent so he can control its size.

forget the fan.. just let the pressure from the Humidifyer do the work.
