Stalled cake salvageable?
    #11768583 - 01/05/10 04:22 AM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Is it possible to salvage stalled cake? im  only trying to do this because this is my first grow and im out of spore. I inoculated 12 cake a lil bit more than a week ago, i think they all end up stalling at one point or another. 2 cakes are about 50% colonized while the rest are 0% to 15% colonized. I still have hopes for the 2 jars that are most colonized while the rest haven't shown any sign of new growth for awhile now. I think the problem may of lie within some of the substrate being too wet and or the incubation temperature was on too high.

Anyhow would it be possible to use the mycelium in stalled jar to spawn it in a new substrate? or the stalled mycelium is dead already and theres nothing you can do about it?

I've tried turning the jars upside down giving it a few tap, still it show no sign of new growth. No sign of contamination or bacterial growth that i can see off either. Are there any other ways to salvage these jars?

A week? One week? They aren't stalled, they are scared.
Put them away and stop looking at them for another week.
Stop touching them, stop turning them, stop tapping them.
Just let them grow.

Well it could be close to 2 weeks? lol, i dont know. Well the things is after 5 days they all show sign of colonization apart from 2 jars. Then as the week progresses mainly only 2 jars continue to show sign of growth while the rest of the jars stay the same. Well its getting close to 2 weeks since inoculation and most of the jars aren't even 10% colonized. Stalled? or real slow colonization, i havent seen any changes in those jars since, so was worried. Got even more worried when my 2 jars that have been colonizing nicely not like the rest are showing sign of slowing down or even starting to stall.

A week ago??????????
It takes jars anywhere from 2-5 weeks to colonize when inoculated
from multi-spore. It takes about a week to even start seeing growth. Patience. Leave em alone and go make some money for a new syringe.

Always write the date down.
I keep a roll of tape and a marker right next to where I shoot up my jars. Every jar gets a date label.
Otherwise, you just don't know how long it's been. :stoned:

Now, as to your question: There's nothing to do.
There's no way to 'fix' a jar if there's something wrong. Leave it alone and let it grow.
Unless it starts to smell bad, don't worry about it.

ok i'll wait more, when people say 2-5weeks for full colonization i always thought that it would rarely take that much time for full colonization for the latter and its only there for rare cases and full colonization would be completed within 2-3weeks. Anyhow you guys are the expert, this is my first grow so yeh i don't know what to expect, just seeing a blob of mycelium here a blob of mycelium there after nearly 2 weeks since inoc and it hasnt shown any sign of growth since, i thought it would of stalled already.

That 2 week date is used for Liquid culture, G2G, and agar innoculations where the mycellium has already established its network before being transfered to a substrate. With MS inoculation the spore need to germinate and establish its network first.

Depends on temperatures and a million other things, including your technique.
But don't get in the habit of rushing things. Patience is key in this hobby.
