FugueRider said: Is it pretty much a vital necessity for substrates and rye jars to colonize in darkness? Because of the very limited space in my new grow area, it would be easier if I didn't need to have my substrates and rye jars in the darkness while they colonize. If however, it makes for a butter sub and faster/better/more stable colonization, then I will figure it out somehow.
Thanks for any thoughts.
12/12 light cycle is fine

since it doesnt matter, is one "better" than the other? ive always colonized my jars in the dark, thats how I learned to do it a few years ago during my first grow and just recently learned that it is an outdated practice. would leaving my jars out say on top of my dresser be a better way to do it than leave them in complete darkness? has anyone done a side by side comparison of how long it takes to colonize cakes in the dark vs light???

for your jars you have no need for darkness. when you spawn to fruiting conditions you need 12/12 like the man above said.

Cool, I've got this little 70 cubic foot grow space set up with the perfect environment that I am going to need...and it is already set up on timers for 12/12. So these are the responses I really wanted to hear. You guys rock.

The early mushroom growers were concerned with growing agaricus(button mushrooms in the grocery store), which requires no light. Just about everything the early cube growers wrote down was learned from them, most of which has no bearing.
As we've said thousands of times over the last few decades, light is irrelevant during colonization. Set your jars on an open shelf or dresser and let them colonize. During the one week consolidation phase after full colonization, you can gain substantial benefit from 12/12 light exposure, which you'll continue after exposing to fruiting conditions. RR

How did you come up with that from what I wrote? I said it's irrelevant during colonization, but it can help to expose to 12/12 during the one week consolidation period.
Most people are using a nearly 30 year old book to grow from which was written based on the general knowledge available at the time. We've learned an awful lot since then. RR

Thanks RR, that clears up any misinformation I had on colonizing my jars in my dresser drawer

Yeah man, the best spot is a open shelf, taking normal daylight and darkness at night. As RR said, it improves the cake performance, at least for me it did. If u wanna avoid in vitro pinning, after the jars colonize 100% stick them in a darkplace for that week more.
