Anyone been addicted to Oxymetazoline (nose spray)?
    #11761318 - 01/03/10 08:53 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

Okay, it's almost 5 in the morning, I woke up 2 times tonight, and this 3rd time there's no chance of going back to sleep. I have no idea why is that. Oh wait, I didn't take my nasal spray whole day yesterday because for once I had no trouble breathing. And still I can breathe relatively good, but still I can't seem to think about anything other than shoving this shit up my nose. I have been using it daily for about 4 years, I can't go anywhere without it. If I go 12 hours without it my nose clogs up so bad I can't breathe or function normally. It seems to me that I would rather go without water than this. It's a very real addiction. And I don't know how to quit. I could go cold turkey, but my nose would clog up, how will I breathe?? AAAA, god damn this shit!

Sounds like your body got use to the spray (and after 4 years, can you REALLY blame your body..?)

I'd say you have a very real problem and you need something to unclog your nose

What that is? I have no idea.

Is a nasal spray the only way to unblock your nose? There might be other alternatives (maybe natural) meaning you can stop using Oxymetazoline. That's as much as I can really help, not too knowledgeable on the subject.

Good luck

Why would you continue using it everyday for 4 years?

wtf...go to the doctor. you're not supposed to use those for more than a few days in a row for this exact same reason. did you really not see the warnings on the bottles in the 4 years of constant use?

in the mean time slow down on the dosage and try breathing through your mouth...

That's Afrin, right?  Oh my god, that stuff is horribly addictive.  I used it for 5 days rather than the longest recommended 3 days, and I was already unable to start a day without it.  I had heard of how addicting it is, so I weened myself ASAP with Sudafed.  Luckily I had only been using it for 5 days.  I can't imagine 4 years.  It's going to be rough getting off it.

It's not "addictive", you just developed a tolerance to it.

Nothing natural ever helped. I had nose problems since I was a child. So has my father, so this may be hereditary in some way. And this thing only makes it worse, I've read it everywhere, one of the withdrawal symptoms is that without it, the nose clogs up, but apparently it passes in a few days. And yeah, I'm sure it's not just a physical dependancy. Oh well, I'll suffer for a few days and hope it clears up, I can't go on using this shit.

Yes, yes I have.

I loved the way it felt, how it smelt, and the small drip you got from it.

I only used it consistently for about a month, then my ear became clogged with some sort of ear-phlegm and I couldn't hear anymore.

So I stopped using it and only use it very sparingly now.

It's more than just tolerance.  If you use it for more than 3 days, your nose swells up inside without it, and you can't breath. You *need* it to reduce the swelling.

I have been using it for 4 years because I feel wonderful on it! And don't tell me it's not addictive.
I have never tried neti pot, perhaps irrigation is the answer, thanks!

I did the same thing for about a year.  My nose would clog up like it was full of concrete if i didn't use it ever 6 hours or so.

Just go cold turkey.  It will suck for a couple of days, but then it will start getting better.

Be prepared to breath through you mouth and snore like a freight train for a week or so.

You might want to try Sudafed + Netipot + saline spray.  You're gonna be spraying shit up your nose every 5 minutes for the next week or so, but you really need to get off that stuff.

You're not going to be sleeping very well for the next week either, and you'll be drooling a whole lot because you'll have to breath through your mouth.

You guys throw around the term addiction way too freely.

It's a physical addiction, not a psychological addiction.  But it certainly is an addiction.

Thanks for the support! I'm going cold turkey from this moment, but I won't throw it away in case things get really really bad. I won't use anything, perhaps only spraying some seawater in there. This is going to be bad, but also a good test for my willpower.
And I don't think that we are overreacting by calling it an addiction, I can't breathe, I can't sleep, I can't function normally without it and all I want to do is to shoot it in my nose. I call it addiction, physical or psychological, but an addiction none the less.

Definitely fits the definition.  Inability to breath through one's nose to the extent of sleep deprivation can certainly be considered a "well-defined physiological symptom of withdrawal."

From Wiki:

Quote:

It is recommended that oxymetazoline not be used for more than three days, as rebound congestion, or rhinitis medicamentosa, may occur.[8] Patients who continue to use oxymetazoline beyond this point may become reliant on the medication to relieve their chronic congestion.
