EDIT: 1.8.10 - Apologies Mods, I put this in the wrong board. Greetings friends! I've been reading this site like crazy since my first grow, which was about a year ago. I've been creepin' around since then, learning as much as possible. I apologize for the lack of pictures at the moment, as I have only a phone camera and the quality is just horrible. I should be able to invest in a better quality camera soon, however. I wish to keep this log to learn from and also help others learn. I've most certainly learned the most out of reading other people's logs! Here we go:
Grow Log (12/26/09): For background info on my grow go to post #11485365: ground white rice (sic) was used with vermiculite as substrate for inoculation. Ratio was 2:1 respectively with a layer of pure vermiculite on the top. Sterilized in a large pot of water with towel on the bottom of the pan, boiled for 3 hours. Let cool with airtight lid over night.
Incubation chamber: Built out of two tubs (found at target, biggest clear plastic tubs they had)- filled approx. 1/8th of the first tub with water, laid out two brick and installed a submersible water heater (for fish tanks, found @ petco for about ~20). I hooked up the heater to a temp. switch, which keeps the chamber at about 80 degrees.
Used approx. 40 jars (I do not like using bags). I lost 12 jars to contams, but I believe this was due to the water levels in the jars themselves, the sterilization process was rushed (the water was allowed to boil too much, I believe). Within a month, the Ban hua thanon was 100%, as cakes. Tazmanians are still being incubated today (the 26th, about 95 percent done however.) I apologize, I did not write down the inoculation date sadly, but it was mid november. On my next grows, I will be much more professional and consistant on my logs to help my learning process as a relatively new grower (less than 3 grows).
Spawning the Ban Hua Thanon: Spawned to aged horse manure, which I found from a local farm (the town right over, pretty nice 10 min ride). I mixed about 1 part PF crumbled cake to 3 parts horse poo (pastuerized at 175 in the oven in an alum. pan with tin foil as a cover, let cool over night).
Fruited today this AM, finally cleaned out a 50 gal fish tank and added 2 bags of perlite + fitted the top of the chamber with a plastic cover, cut to the correct dimensions.
This is my current standing. I plan to spawn the taz soon to more pastuerized poo.
Current RH and Temp of fruiting chamber: 95 percent @ 60 degrees (It is low because I am 'cold shocking' to promote pin formation tonight). I will fan 3-5 times a day for FAE, and I have kept the light (indirect natural + artificial light) on for about 12 hours. I plan on using the 12/12 routine, along with keeping the RH at 95%, temp around 70-75 for fruiting.
Any suggestions, comments etc are welcome. I look only to increase my knowledge on growing mushrooms, and hope to eat some of my labor soon! The only part I was worried about is the white rice...but I believe the spawning to poo was the best idea to 'save' my grow! Thank you for all of this information and an incredibly devoted, and passionate group of people here who are gracious enough to share their experiences, and knowledge!
I also will update with pictures when I can (hopefully soon).
Namaste

Update 12.27.09 I have decided to take on a 5 gallon bucket tek since I've seen some crazy yeilds from some of the grow logs, and I have an abundance of poo, vermiculite and 5 gallon buckets...
So I'm doing a bit of an experiment- first off, the bucket tek will be used for the Tazmanians I have incubated currently as PF style cakes (1 and 1/2 pints being used).
The two pans of poo I have with the Ban Hua Thanon in the fruiting chamber have also been kept (since this AM after a 10 deg. drop from incubation), I've kept the chamber at 95-97% RH and 70-72 degrees F. I cased only one (with pure vermiculite saturated with water and a little bit of some h202, and left the other as-is to see which one works better for my set up (it differs for everyone, right?)
Currently, for the bucket set-up, I am pastuerizing hpoo in the oven at 175 for 3 hours, I will let it cool for 6-7 hours, then in a sterile fashion, break up the Taz cakes into the pasteruized hpoo. I can only take phone pictures, so I apologize for the quality.
Here is the uncased hpoo:
Again, this is terrible quality, so I will do my best, once I can find a decent camera!
Any advice for my current set up, or bucket style growing? I plan on basically doing a monotub in a bucket, which seems to be the best way to go. The more I read about casing, the more I believe it is the way to go, provided you know how to do it right.
-Namaste

my advice first off is to keep the tray covered until its completely colonized that picture looks like you hardly let it colonize before exposing it to the air and secondly embed your pictures instead of linking to them otherwise its not going to get any attention because people wont read all of what you wrote if there are no pics to go with it
edit- i forgot to mention cubensis does not get any help from cold shocking

that isn't fully colonized and shouldn't have been put in your fruiting chamber.

I believe I got overly concerned with 'overlay', and I thought birthing slightly earlier would avoid this. Should I reincubate till their 100%? I already cased one.
Also, I understand that cubensis is a tropical species, but I lowered the temp down 10 degrees to initiate fruiting. I did not use a fridge or any cooling device, but rather took it out of the incubation device. I don't know if 'cold shock' is the right term for that, I understood that cubensis needs a drop in tempature to initate fruiting.
Thanks for the advice, it is much appreciated. Any other suggestions for this grow?

pinning can be affected by a slight decrease in temp but not that extreme it has more to do with timing, genetics, and going from 100%rh to 90's or 80's

12.30.09 Quick Update
No pinning quite yet, but extensive rhizo growth on the hpoo pans of Ban Hua. I injected clean tap water with a few drops of H202 (10 cc) into various dried out areas of slightly 'grayed' mycelium. I believe this is from the lack of water, the other 90% is very white and seems to have developed a good network so far.
Just waiting for pins. 12/12 light, constant FAE with indirect air circulation with an osc. fan that is on every 30 mins (30 on/30 off). I mist pretty liberally on the sides of the chamber to keep up the RH%- the only concern in CO2 build up (there are no holes by the bottom of my chamber). I may use something to prop up the pans to reduce C02 near the bottom of the FC- however the freq. FAE should be enough (I hope).
The bucket grow of Taz. is still incubating, I put a sleeping bag over and around the entire bucket to insulate. My house is usually at 65 degrees, so in order to reach the right temps this is necessary (it is right by the heater as well). Current temp is 76 for the bucket.
I'll update again once I see some pins. It's only been 4 days since fruiting.

1.2.10 Update
26th-2nd (7 days since fruiting)- There is much more rhizomorphic growth, but no definite pinning quite yet. Been keeping RH at 90-99%, and temps around 70-76F. Misting at least 6-7x a day with constant 30/30min osc. fan.
I have just ordered a camera a few days ago, so I should be able to post pictures tommorow once it arrives.
My uncased hpoo is graying on the top, however it has a lot of what looks like rhizomorphic growth. It still looks healthy, and doesn't smelly funky.
I will update again tommorow with more pictures of my set up, bucket grow and detail shots of my hpoo pans in my FC. I am taking the time tonight to see the best way to create an automated FC, any suggestions?

1.6.10 Pins yesterday! I had pictures on my new camera...then my roommate 'borrowed' it for a hiking trip. So, without any pictures atm all I can say is that I have a good pinset finally (counted well over 40 on both casings) some are developing into primordia much faster than others. The biggest is about one inch this morning (woo-hoo!) So I can't wait for the next few days.
I also solved my FC problem (C02 exchange) by using a shotgun tub, and covering the holes with simply paper towels. I used plexi glass on top of the lid to make a little viewing window, as well as to let in more light.
I've kept the temp up at 72-74 recently, 95% RH (dropped since pinning), and I have turned off the OSC. fan as the shotgun takes care of the FAE quite well. If I press on the viewing window of plexi glass on top of the lid, I can feel the a small amount of air coming out of the FC from the holes. I'll usually just press on the lid a few times for FAE then. It's much easier/cheaper than a fan and works well.
Also, I dunked the substrates. I felt that the injection of water (10cc in each), didn't do enough. I used a bleach dunk (1:200) for both, and let soak for about 4 hours, drained, and put back into the new shotgun FC tub. I believe this dunk was needed because my friends informed me that they didn't get the poo to field consistancy. too much , I believe. GIANT mistake, but it was fixed and saved (it is true, cubensis is very forgiving).
I apologize for no GOOD pictures, I took phone pictures, but you can't see anything. I won't fill up the server with crappy pictures of pinning. This friday, I should get my camera back (and hopefully some matured fungi).
In summation: Dunked, new shotgun FC for FAE, lots of pinning, and good times ahead.

1.8.10 A picture update, finally. I apologize to the mods for putting this log in the wrong forum , I lurk the cultivation board the most so I put this in the wrong section. My greatest apologies.
Here are some pictures of the shotgun style FC, and some pin porn, as you say!
The 'beast' is growing on the side of my hpoo casing. As you can see, I cased one pan and not the other. The uncased is pinning slower, but it shows as much promise. I'm going to repeat this experiment a few times to see what works best for my grow op. Casing seems to have won this time, however. I cased only with vermiculite, about 1/4th an inch over the top.
I found some cobweb as well on my uncased tray this morning, treated with h202 using a paint brush on the areas in which I found the contamination. I also increased FAE, as cobweb thrives in stagnant air.
Any suggestions on improving my method? I greatly appreciate all comments, and tips on a better grow. I hope to get better pin sets on future bulk grows (however, I am quite happy with my first try!)
Peace
