Just wondering, does metabolites affect pinning?
    #11685490 - 12/20/09 10:55 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

Does the yellowing of the substrate affect pinning, I don't figure it does judging from pics I've seen where people had a shitload of mushrooms and the surface was all yellow

no, but the bacteria that causes metabolites will.

if your substrate is infected enough, you may get little to no growth.

but a couple little puddles of metabolites never hurt anything.

There's no puddles... Just some yellow colored mycellium, I guess from stuff landing on it when I opened up the tub to mist.

As far as I know, the metabolites are caused by the mycelium.  Unless you have bacteria consuming the substrate, then you would have bacterial metabolites, although you would most probably see a bacterial contamination way before it secreted metabolites.

A couple of metabolites (yellow droplets) are fine.

Quote:

An excess of metabolites can point towards bacterial contamination, over-colonization of a substrate, or too high a temperature. RR

People tend to get a lot of metabolites when using horse/cow dung and is perfectly normal.

Peace.

metabolites-
WTF do they do, i have heard they help the myc resist (something)
they are not harmful, i made agar with some once, i dont think it was enough to make a difference, im sure if it did it would obviously be specie specific agar.
metabolites-a dozen definitions

they basically use snuggie power to overpower infection because infections only have blankets with no sleeves, rather than 2 sleeves, which is what makes snuggies so cool, i forget where i'm going with this, but yeah
