Problem plants give way to magic mushrooms

Problem plants give way to magic mushroom (http://www.sciencenet.org.uk/slup/CuttingEdge/Jan01/fungi.html)
Interesting artical form sciencenet.org.uk....

A host of exotic mushroom species - including hallucinogenic magic mushrooms - are spreading across the UK as gardeners increasingly turn to wood chippings to control weeds in their flower beds. Speaking at the British Ecological Society's Winter Meeting Dr Peter Shaw described how modern gardening techniques have accidentally created a new type of habitat that is allowing alien fungi to flourish among British bedding plants, providing amateur mycologists with exciting new quarry.

It is most likely that the alien fungi arrived in the UK in plant material destined for Kew Gardens, where they colonised wood chip beds and then made their way into the UK's wood chip supply system. Although some species (such as Stropharia aurantiaca) remain confined to wood chip, others (such as the wavy-capped magic mushroom Psilocybe cyansecens) are now spreading to natural habitats, says Dr Shaw.

'The most remarkable fungi we have found so far in wood chippings comes from a small planting scheme on a roundabout near Leatherhead, which is on my route to work,' says Dr Shaw. 'The roundabout was mulched in 1999 and in May 2000 a flush of creamy-yellow fungi came up. It turned out that these were four different agarics: Volvariella gloiocephela, Agrocybe praecox, Agrocybe putaminium and Psilocybe percivalii.' This is only the second time A. putaminium - which is a native of North America - has been recorded in the UK.

How the North American fungi ended up on a Surrey roundabout is a mystery, says Dr Shaw. 'A minor roadside planting scheme has turned up two exceptionally unusual fungi in its first year. The wood chips were bought from a commercial supplier in Essex, but how they acquired their strange fungal flora is still unclear,' he says.

Even though they rarely, if ever, exist in nature, wood chip beds make excellent habitats for unusual fungi. They like the beds' homogeneity, depth and large internal surface area, plus the fact that they are regularly disturbed by the gardener. This makes wood chip beds very different habitats from the rotting wood on forest floors that fungi naturally live on. According to Dr Shaw: 'It is arguable that in piling up wood chips, gardeners have created a qualitatively new habitat.'

wood chipped beds from my memory of working
there.Better go see some old collegues hu lol

I though spores could travel long distances in the wind?
So why do people always think the've been introduced through

That's an interesting article...

Introduced/exotic/alien species usually spell trouble for native ones, though; at least when dealing with plants and animals. Do you think this could be the case with mushrooms as well?

its a problem with species like honey fungus that attack living trees.
But for fungi that live of dead matter its just a faster return of wood back to soil i hope  could get a few squirels and badgers triping though lol let alone those pranching deer

I am glad the article has stimulated some good discussion. I am very interested to find out the results of your identification (Mr_Mushrooms) as I have seen some similar mushrooms at the edge of a small wood (Mostly pine but also other trees). Perhaps Psilocybe cyansecens are becoming more widespread and adapting to new environments in mutated form.

They're going to end in my country too. It just won't be a mystery for me.
