My incubator setup
    #1162225 - 12/22/02 11:46 AM (21 years, 2 months ago)

My first incubator was a water bath type. It worked ok but I did not like all the heat on the bottom of the jars. I tryed spacing them up with card board but I did not like that either. I grabbed an old cooler out of the garage and went to work. Actually all I did was drill a hole in the top for my thermometer!!

The cooler with thermometer installed

For heat I have an old pasta storage jar filled with water/h2o2 and a 50W fish tank heater

This setup worked pretty well but seemed slow to recover temp after being opened and would only reach 80F with the heater turned all the way up. I wanted to be at 86F. I measured the temp of the water in the jar, it was well over 100F, plenty. I decided to try moving the air around to make the temps more even. I found a small cardboard box that one of my old 80mm computer fans fit on top of. I cut the lid off the box and zip tied the fan as shown. Then I cut holes in the bottom of the box to suck cold air off the bottom and move it around.

For power to the fan I used an old 9.6v 300ma power converter for a cordless phone. It runs the 12v fan just fine and almost silent.

I have noticed a great improvement with the fan running. I had to turn the thermostat on the fish tank heater down! All the jars feel equally warm when I touch them, and colinization is much faster and even.

I hope this helps some. Please add your findings to this if you have somthing that works good.

Have a Shroomery New Year!!!

Looks and sounds most excellent. I wasn't quite sure how to set up my first incubator, but I think I'll rip off you, haha.

Because water cools extremely fast, would it be possible to substitute your solution that's in the spheghetti container with something else? I'm thinking corn syrup, shampoo or something pretty thick that would retain heat for a while (so the heater isn't constantly running and it'd seem to me less temp fluctuations in the container).

Reasonable idea?

You might try a light oil like cooking oil for that. dont know if it would go rancid quickly or not.

(Shirley) the Poo Experement has been a failure so far. Need to mix with straw or somthing to get more air flow. I tryed a liquid mycelium injection. Perhaps it would be better using grain to spawn. Projects, Projects
