Waking up A.blazei spores
    #11554671 - 11/30/09 12:12 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

In late October, I put some A.blazei spores on MYPA agar. They did not germinate, so I scoured this board for some ideas on what to do and a few people suggested putting other growing culture on the same plate. So, I went to the store and got some nice looking button mushrooms (A. bisporus) and put some of their inner cap tissue on the same plate.

For a while, it looked like A. bisporus pieces died (they turned brown/black), but after a few weeks, they started putting out some nice cottony mycelium. This was a nice surprise.

But I was in for an even bigger surprise. A few weeks ago, another area of the plate started growing - a place where the A. bisporus didn't touch. Could it be A.blazei spores waking up?

I isolated a section of this new growth and put it on a new plate. Here it is, as of today:

Any thoughts/comments on this? Is it likely to be A.blazei? Or is it something else (a ninja piece of A. bisporus that jumped around the plate? a contaminant? something else?)

--------------------
I am looking for the following edible cultures:
  • Chicken of the woods (Laetiporus sulphureus)
  • Wood blewit (Lepista nuda)
  • Cauliflower (Sparassis crispa)

My trade list of available cultures is in my Journal.

I have some Leucoagaricus americanus and Agaricus campestris spores that I've been trying to germinate with no success.  I'll have to give this a try!

I believe you can try your Chlorophyllum rhacodes for the leucoagaricus americanus.  That would be the most similar.

gribi, did you swipe the spores on that part of the plate?
Did you put the A. Bisporus tissue on a section that was swiped by your A Blezei spores?

The tissued section seems to be overlapping the new growth a little and the new growth is a bit thinner leading me to think it's growth from spores....could be wrong though.
I will watch.

I used a spore syringe (i.e. spores in sterile water) - putting a few droplets on the plate.

I can't say for sure, because by the time I put A. Bisporus tissue on the plate, the droplets have dried out. I believe it was not in the same spots though (that would make for some pretty odd coincidence).

It looks that way to me too. New growth seems to stop at the border of the existing mycelial mat of A. bisporus.

Exactly. It will be a while, but I'll update this post with my progress. Also, I should be able to detect the presence (or absence) of the almond smell on spawn.

Quick update: it grew out nicely, so it's time to put it on grain and see what it really is.
