Tales of a Shaman's Apprentice
    #11538139 - 11/27/09 03:35 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

I have recently been becoming rapidly more and more interested in biology and related endeavors, and I am currently reading "Tales of a Shamans Apprentice" which I randomly picked up at Bookmans, an entertainment exchange store where I live.

This book is about Mark J. Plotkin's journeys to the amazon rainforest for ethnobotanical research where he attempts to learn all he can from the Shamans in various areas.

This is opening up a whole knew world of interest for me and I was just wondering if anyone else has read the book, what their thoughts on it were, and possibly suggestions for furthering my knowledge in this area through other sources.  Thanks!

I haven't read it, but it certainly sounds fascinating!

There's no ethnobotany history talk without mention of the name Richard Evans Schultes  :bow2:

He co-wrote "Plants of the Gods" with LSD inventor Albert Hoffman, as well as "A Golden Guide to hallucinogenic Plants" and "The Lost Amazon: The Photographic Journey of Richard Evans Schultes"

Also, a student of his, Wade Davis wrote some good books titled "One River" about the amazon and "The Serpent and the Rainbow" which is about Haitian zombies (Very neat!)

great suggestions!  Yes, in fact Plotkin was also a student of Schultes, and quotes him often in this book.

Good to know, Plotkins writing was a lot better than I expected and I am really enjoying it.

I had recently stumbled upon "Plants of the Gods" somehow and was intrigued when I saw Albert Hoffmans name as an author, and now that I know a little bit about Schultes, I am even more excited about it!  Should be arriving in about a week

Hahaha! One of my favorite videos is a talk by Paul Stamets on magic mushrooms (he was speaking in Amsterdam obviously), and in one part he discusses various guides people have written over the years... he basically put that book in the WTF category because Golden Guides are for kids! Said something like "I have no idea how this was even cleared for publication..." :tongue2:

I've spent a few months in Peru with a shaman.
A very special and unforgatable experience, beyond immagination.
If anybody is interested, I will give more details of the place and the shaman.

No trading in here mate.

You need to remove that and wait till the marketplace opens up to you.
