does anyone have a detailed description of british liberty cap
    #11536601 - 11/27/09 10:35 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

:confused:Hey peps

I feel like a going round in circles here lol, i been out picking for 3days in a row now, and I'm still having serious problems identifying wot is a liberty cap. i have looked at hundreds of pictures, listened to advice and still i am having probs, it really knocking my morale. All i want is a detailed description of wot a liberty cap looks like when its wet (in the field) and when its been dried, does it always have a nipple on the top, wot colour should the gills be, is the stipe always whitish, do the always look slimey, size, etc, once i got these etails i can sort thru wot i have picked over the last 3days then photograph them and post them on here for opinions of the foto's, and then I really hope i will have sum clarification that i have sum liberty caps, and as its friday i cud eat them and be tripping like i use to ack in the day (i use to buy them ready picked lol) :mushroom2: I really do look foward to any opinions, thanx

Well, here goes nothing...

When wet, the cap is dark brown to grey at the bottom with a light-brown nipply bit at the top. It's slimy to touch and will adhere to whatever you place it next to. The stem is thin, solid, off-white possibly bruising a blue-black colour in places.

When semi-dry, it's white to off-white all over and has a sort of deflated look/feel to it.

The stipe can be quite curved or crooked.

The gills are dark brown and the spore print is browny purple.

Here's some I picked earlier.

i find it really hard to describe a liberty cap because they can vary so much, itd probably jus sound like a broad description, but when they are wet they are darker and they dont always have a distinct nipple. and the stems can go between a reddy brown colour to a pure white

hope that clears something up?

can u get some pics up at all?

You need to spend more time in the fields and less on the 'net  Srsly, all the descriptions and pictures you need are there, and you've probably seen them. What you need now, is some real-life experience.

You have a collection of random LBMs. Mycena, inactive Panaeolus, Psathyrella. That sort of thing. Nothing active.

Nothing. You just haven't been looking long and hard enough. What you found are some of the most common mushrooms that can be found in almost any pasture.

Very fresh they might look like this:
http://rotten.splane.ru/images/PS.jpg

or like these:
https://files.shroomery.org/files/06-41/086407984-liberty_cap56.jpg

Note the olive colour, the slightly sticky peelable pellicle and the little nipple on top.  Stick to pretty much exactly that.  The really slimy round ones I find are usually stropharia semiglobata which have a yellow or white cap.  The other mushies I often see are little umbrellas with white gills, mycena.  Those are no good.  Slightly bigger ones are the Paneolus and Psathyrella GK mentioned.  Once you look for the olive, the slightly sticky peelable pellicle and the little nipple on top you'll avoid all those other ones.

These were clearly drying in the field.  They probably are smooth and not sticky:
http://www.lycaeum.org/nepenthes/Plants/Images/Psilocybe.semilanceata.3.jpg
They lighten to that creamy colour and often darken towards the base.  The stems are slightly springy, rather than very squishy.  That's a way to tell, but look for the nipple.  It ought to have dark gills, although they can look a light olive or brown at first.  If you get home and do a spore print it should be pretty dark purply brown.

When they're a bit baked they can wrinkle:
http://www.first-nature.com/fungi/images/strophariaceae/psilocybe_semilanceata1.jpg

Look very closely in the right sort of patch, a sheep field that had a bit of rain and isn't too cold, and when you find some, crouch and look around for more of the little sprouts.  The mycelium can stretch out in lines and rings, or the spores might have scattered locally.  Then try other parts of the field where the grass looks a bit like that.  It's very late in the season though.  I hope that helps and good luck.

Certainly not. Not from my part in any case. I use a light background color, so it's really hard to read your messages if they're written in yellow or white
