Any vegetarians find family Thanksgiving most awkward?

Being a vegetarian, family Thanksgiving is among the most awkward times of the year. Even worse if you are a vegan(and the family puts butter on EVERYTHING). This is especially true in the midwest.
Granparents and old folks seem to be entirely dumbfounded by the fact that someone doesnt eat -any- meat.
"skipping out" usually isnt an option, but we have to sit there and stare at an empty plate after eating our rolls and bean salad.(given that this is an extended meat eating family affair and not just with an also vegetarian wife and kids)
Eating Thanksgiving by yourself or with immediate family who may or may not also be vegetarians can be one thing, but with the extended family you get tired of explaining yourself over and over.

this is why i don't eat thanksgiving with my family, not because i'm a vegetarian, which i'm not, but because of the awkwardness of crap like this
tomorrow i'm going over to a buddy's house where there will be beer, women, food and football

I'm sorry, that must really blow. We have quite a few vegetarians in my family, so we make something for everyone. Why not try making your own dish to bring that you can eat also?

I'm so lucky my mom's vegetarian too! I converted her. My dad and my brother still eat meat though. We never do a turkey because it's way too much food for 2 people. The rest of my family is still in South Africa, so it's just us. My dad usually does steak for himself and my brother, and then my mom and I make a nice big dinner for us.
Our family's been invited to have thanksgiving dinner with my brother's girlfriend's family. They're Italian... It's going to be rough.

I'm vegan, so I never go to any sort of family dinners. Every time I get harassed for my choice.
So this year, I lied and said I had to work. That'll show em!

I've never understood vegetarians with the exception of those who don't eat meat because they don't like the taste. The animal's already dead, so why not make use of its tasty corpse? Your abstaining from purchasing meat products does nothing to prevent the ongoing slaughter of animals who only exist in the first place because humans have bred them for an explicit purpose.

Thankfully my girl's parents are totally cool with me being vege and respect it, so I should be a non-awkward one for me

The meat industry is just gross. If someone caught a fish and cooked it up for me, I would probably have some, but man.....if you only knew what you eat.

A completely healthy alternative: lab meat.

My reason is actually half preference half factory farming industry. If I ever did eat meat it would be something I killed myself. I just dont agree with having it a process so removed from ourselves and so much more brutal than a natural death. We should have the blood on our hands if we've got the flesh in our belly. If you cant kill you dont deserve to eat the dead. It isnt that they are slaughtered so much as how they are slaughtered that bothers me. Skin ripped off while their hearts still beat with no sedation. If you went out and shot a deer you'd make damn sure it was dead before ripping off it's flesh. The factory farms dont care about common decency because time is money.
I have nothing against the hunter, I have something against the factory farm owner. I might not be able to stop them but I can sure as hell boycott them.
I do not enjoy the taste of meat, but if I was in the wilderness and my survival depended on hunting and eating I would do it.

What about lab meat?
No death. Completely organic. 100% REAL meat.

I find the idea of lab meat entirely unsettling for reasons I cannot comprehend.
Id rather eat an animal I killed myself than eat some chunk of flesh artificially growing in a lab. It fucking creeps me out. Is this soulless chunk of flesh living or an abomination?
Plus my reason is also preference. I dont like meat, never liked meat. Didnt like it when I ate it, but I was forced to as a kid.

Yeah, I'd probably eat lab meat.
It doesn't look too appetizing from what I've seen, but I'm sure it would taste the same.
There's also an issue of health. Animal fat melts wayy above human body temperature, meaning that the fat will always be solid in your system.
60% of all antibiotics used in the US are used to fatten cattle. Overuse of antibiotics causes antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The animals are also injected with all sorts of hormones and steroids which are then released into the ground water and could potentially damage delicate ecosystems. The hormones also stay in your food, and eating meat increases the risk of breast cancer.
Not to mention some of the unthinkable cruelty that goes on...
If I reduce demand, they will reduce supply. Even if its one less cow that's brought into the world to be kept in inhumane conditions, and slaughtered cruelty.
But yeah, I'd probably eat lab meat...
