ever lost a laptop to a glass of water?
    #11454497 - 11/14/09 03:15 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

i have.  it was my laptop i got through college.  accidentally turned it into a brick not even 3 months after graduating.  if it had happened before, i would have gotten a brand new laptop for only $250.  but no.  it happened after.  sucked dick.

and tonight, i fucking spilled a glass of water directly onto my netbook - my only means of communication with the states, and the only way for me to buy tickets and make a schedule and whatnot.  i started wigging hard, pressure filled my head, i couldn't hear anything other than a droning static buzz and my own voice saying "oh my god, oh my god".

but this time, i reacted.  and fast as a motherfucker.  while my head was filled with white noise, my hands were unplugging it and taking the battery out almost simultaneously.  i popped the keyboard off and dried it all down.  luckily, this keyboard seems to have a decent shield against that, so it seems little made it  underneath, and what did was dried.

As long as you don't try to turn it back on before it's completely dry you should be good. Hopefully.

I've lost about three $75.00 keyboards to beer.

I spilled a beer on my Powerbook a few years ago. Fortunately my friend reacted quickly and grabbed his small Wet/Dry vacuum and sucked all the beer out.

It was more than a half a bottle and it did absolutely no damage at all thanks to his quick thinking.

Me too. Now I use this rubber waterproof keyboard. I still spill on it all the time and just wash it off in the sink lol.

I'm using a razor keyboard, I need some way to make it liquid-proof.

I spilt a coke in my laptop. It just shut off instantly. Luckily I took it to computer store and somehow they got it working after 3 days of cleaning and drying. I also spilt milk in a desktop keyboard that was pretty bad.

My dumbass ex knocked over an entire Arizona Iced Tea onto my PC and it shut down instantly.  Fortunately it only got the PSU wet, which must have some sort of circuit-breaker (instead of a fuse),  because after I tried it and dried the case, made sure none of the circuitry was wet, it restarted fine.

You can always use the onscreen keyboard in the meantime.

Yes, but it's only been a little over a month.  I'm very pissed off because I'm left with nothing, I even had to move back in with my parents.  I'd have 5grand right now in my bank if I hadn't met her.  I calculated it all out.  And I'd still have a job.

your keyboard is probably fucked. i had my laptop in the bathroom while i was taking a bath and i think as I got out some drops dripped down onto my keyboard. it completely ruined a lot of keys so i had to buy a USB keyboard in order to use. totally defeats the purpose of a laptop now. luckily it's about 3 years old and happened just around the time when i wish to upgrade my pc.

sorry to hear about this man. make sure it drys completely before turning anything back on, if you're lucky you'll only lose a few and hopefully not so essential keys..

a waitress spilled coffee in my old IBM, she was so apologetic about it, I
kept telling her it's not a big deal, I just turned it off, shook out the
excess and took it into the bathroom and used the hand drier for a couple
of cycles, came back out and turned it on, everything was fine

Turn off your machine.  Unplug everything you can including battery.  If you have a fan, place netbook in front of fan and allow to dry for 48-72 hours.  I know it might be rough, but there could still be some condensation inside that is preventing things from functioning normally.

I dropped a $2000 camera in salt water once.  I immediately took the battery out and gave it a fresh water bath as soon as I got home.  When salt water dries, there is sediment and residue that will fuck up your stuff bad.  A fresh water bath will wash away all salt water sediment/residue.  I allowed it to dry for over 72 hours.  When I put the battery back in, it worked fine, with the exception that I needed to take it in to have the sensor cleaned.  Cleaning cost $100 as opposed to the $2000 to replace my camera.

Also, you can try getting a large bag of dry, uncooked rice and placing your netbook in the rice.  Just make sure none of the rice can enter any open ports or air vents.  The rice will help absorb some of the moisture trapped inside.  You need to allow it to dry for at least 48-72 hours before attempting to power on or else you run the risk of shorting it out.

Good Luck!

Computers are my life, I would never harm them with liquid damage. I have, however, lost a gameboy advance to a toilet when I was 10. Took out the battery quickly and dried it off. Worked fine.
