Thermophiles
    #11394187 - 11/05/09 09:15 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

So, it's been said that thermophiles are active in a temperature range between 113 F and 176 F.

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11393631#11393631

If the thermophiles are inactive, then exactly how do they contribute to a substrate? (given that temps are below this range even in the high heat generating bulk subs)

I'm not trying to make the statement here that they don't benefit a substrate, or even that any of the above is true.  Just want to have some conversation on the matter.

My understanding is this: they are there, and they keep the substrate from being 'uncolonized'. So competitor organisms can't really get a foot hold.
But your mycelium has been spawned in massive abundance,
and will overwhelm and probably devour the poor thermophiles
and then proceed to finish colonizing the block.

It also occurred to me after a bit of reading that maybe the pasteurization process enhances nutrient content of the sub by stimulating thermophilic activity for a while.  So pasteurization, besides killing off competitors, might act as a kind of composting?

Sure. It certainly pre-digests the material to some extent. Softens it and hydrates it. Then the bacteria get going and micro-mulch it.

So, I guess it seems likely they don't play much of an active role in a colonizing sub.

thermophile munch away at matter making it a simpler form for plants and fungi etc.. to use

During and after pasteurization for sure.  But during colonization too? it seems temps would be too low at that point.. unless there are details I'm missing.

thermophiles cease growth at 68f so even at colonization they would still be there, they just prefer to thrive at higher temps

Gotcha.  So 113 - 176 F is ideal, but they're still 'active' below this range.  Just not thriving.

yep, now if u had sterile conditions and high temps and the thermophiles did their thing it could be beneficial for mushies and such leading to faster colonization and etc.. i dont see why not.. but that would be if u allowed this to happen before knockin it up with mycelium
