100% used coffee grounds as substrate
    #11375265 - 11/03/09 08:29 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

Ok I know I'm new here and used the search button a lot but what I could not find is, I've been freezing the used coffee grounds everyday (to prevent molding) to save up instead of going to starbucks (which I will probly start now) and is it really bad for a first time grower to PC used coffee grounds and use it at its field capacity as the only substrate?

For cubensis, plain coffee isn't the best choice.  It's a great supplement, but used by itself is underwhelming.  Try mixing the coffee with some bagged up cow manure from the nursery and up to 50% vermiculite for a great substrate.  Don't forget gypsum.

Thank you RR but as I am doing this inside a closet so manure isn't good for me. How about using coir or straw? Would that be better for me? I kind of want to use only 1 substrate to make things simple my first grow.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

What's that got to do with anything?  There's no smell from composted and properly pasteurized manure.  Horse manure is better than cow, but often in large cities, cow manure is about all you can get at Lowes or other hardware stores.

Coir, even just straight coir, would be just fine.

Brand is irrelevant since it's bagged up locally and changes from region to region and from season to season.  Boycott walmart.  Get it from a local nursery.

Ok, I just went to lowes and picked up a few bags of ever green composted manure, I'm assuming this is OK to use as the only substrate for a first time grower?
