question about casing...

at first I assumed that casing got better yields due to surface area.. then I started thinking that didn't make any sense, because then technically, a smaller case would have a better yield off that jar's worth of mycelium.. I'm unclear about how this works.. Why does a PF cake yield so much less than a PF cake put in a casing? And how does using more than one cake per casing increase it also? Wouldn't 2 casings with one jar produce the same as one casing with 2 jars? And if this is not so, what do you I do with 17 1 pint jars? What do you think would be the best way to divide that up?

hehe.. lots of questions

i think you said it all, by better surface area being available with a casing. 2 cakes, more of a network to reform while incubating, more surface area and material to work with during growth. more mushrooms.

Casings have more surface area for the pins to grow on, therefore there is more yield. The more cakes you use in a casing, the larger the yield since more cakes=more colonization. Depending on the size of your casings, 4 cakes per casing should be sufficient.
