Can plain whole brown rice be used instead of brown rice flour for the substrate?

yes you can use regular brown rice, TEK's I have found use a coffie grinder to make a course flour out of it. If you have a pressure cooker birdseed is much cheaper.

Wild bird seed. I got mine at Wal Mart (under $5 for a 25lb bag). I'm not sure if 10lbs pressure will be enough heat. The TEK I use is 15lb pressure for 30-45min. There are some good teks around that might give you more answers.

Yes, I have personally found success in using whole brown rice (Basmati, in fact) I cased with 50/50 organic compost and verm. I recommend casing when using whole brown rice; I have also been successful in fruiting crumbled brf/verm cakes. To think about it, I think casing really is the way to go. Whole Rye is sometimes hard to find; so is millet and straw. I should also note that I don't have a pressure cooker. I use a steamer and steam the rice in quart jars (easier to find), steam has a higher temperature than boiling water, albeit not as high as a pressure cooker, but it seems to work for me.

I just used whole brown rice (Uncle Bens) for my cakes. All I did was stick the rice in a blender and grind it pretty good (leaving a somewhat coarse texture). I've heard that grinding your own rice works better anyway.

ok guys, thanks for the input, but i guess the only way to find out 100% if its for you is to try it. so my friends jars are currently cooling, my friend mixed 1/4 cup brown rice, 2/3 verm., 1/4 water in each jar pc for 1 hour at 10psi. incubation will be tomorrow, ill report my friends growth to you, if any...
