Anyone gowing your own tea?
    #11331086 - 10/27/09 11:42 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I have a new gardening project in the works, which I will "formally" start early next year. Right now, I'm just collecting all the seeds I want, buying pots, and generally just planning everything/doing research.

Anyway, I've been trying to find some interesting things to grow for this purpose, and I'm sure there are someone here who has a similar project going. So I was hoping to get some tips on plants/herbs suitable for tea making. They don't have to be active, though it would be a plus.

Here's a list of the ones I currently have acquired seeds for:

- Camellia Sinensis (A must, obviously, being the "real" tea and all)
- Nicotiana Rustica (Not primarily for tea, but tobacco tea does sound appealing..)
- Mentha x Piperita (Peppermint)
- Glycirrhiza Glabra (Liquorish)
- Hypericum Perforatum (St. Johns Wart)
- Melissa Officinalis (Lemon balm)
- Heimia Salicifolia (Sinicuichi)
- Matricaria recutita (chamomile)
- Artemisia absinthium (Wormwood)
- Salvia officinalis (Common Sage)

Planning on getting:
- Peganum harmala (Syrian Rue)
- Turnera diffusa (damiana)
- Salvia D. (both for tea and smoking)

Plan is to eventually mix different plants/herbs and try to come up with some nice tea with pleasant side-effects. Obviously a long term project, and I won't be growing everything at once. I'll probably start all the ones that needs years of growing at the same time though.

I used to grow Melissa Officinalis (Lemon balm) for tea. It was great.

I got some Catha Edulis ("Khat") seeds I can make tea out of the foliage in a few years time. I have some kind of mint that grows in my yard every year I make tea out of that.

Salvia divinorum is not active as a tea, salvinorin A is broke down by stomache acids and such, so the only noticable effects would be about the same as the ol' garden sage...
Salvia divinorum, however, is active when smoked, or quidded (chew of leaves)..

Actually, Salvia is VERY active as a hot tea.

Not sure why this is, but I and numerous others have tried it with much success.

:google: it too.

Parks seed company sells tea sampler seed packs that are good.  They also contain plants to use for natural sweeteners.  They are a good value.

I know it can be very dangerous and potentially deadly to use the leaves from nicotiana rustica, but making tea on a small amount of cured leaves isn't nearly as dangerous as smoking uncured leaves, or even smoking a lot of cured ones. It definitely comes with a "use with extreme caution" label on it, but respectful and careful use shouldn't result in anything but nausea and general physical discomfort worst case scenario.

At least that's what a few google searches told me. However, I could off course be wrong, so if you have sources saying otherwise, or other experiences, then please share them, as tea certainly isn't worth dying for.

In any case, I will be extremely careful with that plant, I've indigested very high doses of nicotine before, and it's not something I want to repeat.

I'm mostly seeing online snarkiness from people who've never tried the tea, in the real world.

How much Salvia did you brew, and what did it do for you?

I was under the impression that salvia d. tea was one of the traditional methods of ingestion the Mazatec used. I have heard a few places that a traditional tea making approach doesn't work well though, but I'm uncertain how accurate those sources are. Most recipes I've seen, uses around 1oz of dried leaves.

I am a fan of quidding and have tried the tea method with approximately 15-20 leaves shared among two people.

We also brushed our teeth and used mouth rinse.

The effects seemed more intense than quidding and lasted a bit longer, the other individual was a first time user too, and there has been much talk of the need to use salvia multiple times to get the full experience and from my knowledge our experience was about equal.

If you have 15-20 whole leaves I would definitely recommend giving it a try.

OP: Have you ever smoked N. rustica before?  I have never made tobacco tea but I would recommend you at least try it with N. tobaccum before you do with N. rustica.  Rustica can be so severely strong that I imagine you could very easily make a tea that is too potent.

Anyhow, as far as suggestions go, you could add E. novo/E. coca to your list, as they would be nice additions to your tea plants.  A friend of mine who drinks a lot of Yerba Mate is growing a small Yerba Mate plant.  There's a lot of mint family plants that can can be used in teas, too.

Some tobacco tea claims:

Quote:

Is it true that tobacco tea has potent anticancer properties?
One of my friends works in the medical field, and he said that a little known fact about tobacco is that if you make tea out of the cured leaves it's one of the most potent anti-cancer foods there is. Apparently it has even more cancer fighting antioxidants than pomegranate juice, plus it's rich in B vitamins. Has anyone else heard this?

In medieval times, most herbs would be used only for a few conditions in which it was deemed effective—not for a vast range of disorders from head lice to hemorrhoids, from hysteria to tetanus, as happened with tobacco. Secondly, writings on this subject commonly imply that nicotine is the only active medicinal constituent, yet the various species of Nicotiana contain many other alkaloids. Thirdly, the leaves and juice were much used for skin disorders, possibly including basal cell cancer. Might tobacco leaves contain an anticancer agent, as proved to be the case with periwinkle (vinca alkaloids)?
So, although not fully tested, they might have a specialised medicinal use as a reverse to the cancer damage made by smoking it.
Have no idea however, how many antioxidants is in the actual tobacco plant.

PS. Emerging evidence suggests that regular nicotine treatment may be helpful in improving symptoms of OCD, although the pharmacodynamical mechanism by which this improvement is achieved is not yet known, and more detailed studies are needed to fully confirm this hypothesis. Anecdotal reports suggest OCD can worsen when cigarettes are smoked as a way of obtaining nicotin.
Imagine a tobacco-based coffee-like drink. The product would have the following requirements and advantages: Tea-containing tobacco - Patent 4694842The product consists essentially of tobacco leaves, tea leaves and.....

Fulfills the physical pleasures of tobacco. Namely taste, smell and nicotine. Allows satisfying rituals associated with coffee drinking to accompany consumption of tobacco. Allows users of the substitute tobacco product to blend in unnoticeably and unoffensively with non-smokers.

Woha, thanks durian, lots of interesting stuff there.

The tobacco tea quote is also very interesting, particularly the part about OCD's.

I just harvesting some mint, lemon balm, and lavender to make my tea for the winter. I actually have them drying out right now so I can put it all into jars and use it later. I love mixing them all together. Stevia rebaudiana is very good for a natural sweetener by the way. =D Enjoy making your own tea, it is amazingly better than buying it. Drinking something you grew is the best.

Passion Flower is also something you might want to grow. I find that it relaxes me more than many other plants. You can also check online for some, I bought 4 oz for 7 dollars the other day. =D
