ID Request: Possible Edible?
    #11321051 - 10/25/09 08:42 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Habitat: baseball field. found in a mix of grass and sandy dirt.
Area: PNW
Cap Color: White-tan
Stem: Sturdy, White/light tan
Gills: Purple-dark brown/black. Unattached.
Veiled: They have a veil ring but I did not observe any young ones with veil attached.
Spore: Brown

I am new to edible mushroom hunting, so any help would be appreciated.
My best guess is Agaricus campestris L. ( or my best hope  )

What does it smell like? Did they grow singly or in clusters? I'd guess it was a meadow mushroom (just like you guessed) if it smells pleasant. It would be good to see what the buttons look like. Don't bother with the older ones, though. They're  a bit skanky.

I advise any noob looking to identify mushrooms to fill out the ID form and provide clear photographs. Knowledge is a privilege and deserves respect. Let's give due props to the experts!

Does it stain yellow anywhere?  Does it smell metallic at all?

They smell pleasant, not metallic.
There is no yellow staining.
They were found in clusters.
Thanks again for you time.

Since the smell is pleasant, I guess its one of the edible species of Agaricus.

Make sure it doesn't smell like ink as you cook it.
