Help To Id Liberty Caps
    #11264172 - 10/17/09 06:17 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hi im a complete no0b to the site and mushroom picking and Id's but  anyway i was wondering if anybody could shed any light on these mushrooms i found today whilst walking my dogs.

They were found in a grassy, cow filled field, well more of a valley. some are sticky to the touch others arent so. most of them are bruising blue one or 2 are keeping there tan/brown colour. i tried to do a spore print (which i am not 100% on either) but but the prints are black (i havent tested them all i seem to be destroying them as i do it so i thought id better take some pics first). there is one on the pics the smallest mushroom which gills seem to be orange, which i have read is not what im after. Not to worry due to uncertainty and the fact there is only a small number even if they were all Lib caps i wont be trying these. not untill i have a reasonable batch that i am 100% certain of.

Im just looking to find out what are and what arent Liberty caps which ones are/could be poisonous and to start to gather information for picking them. i know its a bit late in the season but im in no rush id rather be 100% before i go munching aload of wild mushrooms. I have tried to gather information from every resource possible but know there is no substitue for an experience collectors guidance unfortunatley the only people around here that pick from these fields are a bunch of chavs who would eat anything that isnt red with white dots so id hardly go to them for any guidance. The only mushrooms i have every tried were mexican and phillipene cubensis which i ordered online before all the laws were changed and look nothing like what grow around here.

Anywhoo sorry to rant if i need to add more info please say and ill be as specific as i can.

Thanks guys

Lp

Inactive Panaeolus mostly, no liberty caps in that collection.

ohwell nevermind. how can you tell these from liberty caps, any pictures and descriptions i find seem to look alot like these but obviously im wrong. (not here to argue just to learn) does anybody know a good book i could read through to help to differenciate between psycoactive/poisonous/inactive mushrooms.

i think the field must have already been cleared. When is the end of season for lib caps? would it be pointless for me to carry on looking this late on? Im gonna scour this site for info on hunting and id'ing mushrooms. can anybody direct me to a good page seems like there is alot of novices asking advice just hard to desypher what is relevant advice.

thanks for the hasty responses guys

youre lucky that they happen to be inactive pans. dont consume anything without knowing 100% mushrooms are more dangerous than bears.

trial and error through picture comparison =  safe

trial and error through eating  = very dumb

be careful

Does anyone new actually look up libs b4 they go hunting, or do they just hope every little mushroom they find is a lib? it doesnt seem very effective to me.

Yes you were right there are no old, bold mushroom hunters but i know that they dont have deadly look-alikes and the stuff that i hunted was
Panaeolina foenisecii and some were Panaeolus olivaceus. And it was such a niceday, yesterday
