Fluorescent lighting for cacti
    #11260469 - 10/16/09 02:51 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I am using some fluorescent tubes producing almost 5600 lumens for some cacti i am growing indoors, the pups that some of the cacti are producing are almost as big as the pups that came from the cacti being outdoors, I am rather impressed.

I was wondering if anyone else is using fluorescent lighting for their cacti and if so what type of setup are you using and how are the results?

I want to add some more lights, that is why I ask.

Here are the pics.

I also use florescent lighting but only for my seedlings, pereskiopsis and grafts. The big guys go outside.

im thinking about getting a 150 watt HPS light for my cacti. 16,000 lumens will treat it right.

I have a 400W HPS here and they LOVE it (150-250W might be plenty considering how 400W ends up burning them when they are too close). I have a san pedro almost 2ft tall under it and other various trichs (a few other mature ones and a bunch of seedlings) and a peyote. They all love it and grow fat.

I think cacti grow easier than weed or other plants under HPS/MH because they have no leaves, just a big main "leaf", so they get plenty of light even with lower wattages.

I use a 250 watt metal halide for about 20 trichocereus cacti- I used fluorescents before but fluorescents usually just make cacti etiolate a little bit...

These are regular i guess, T8's.  I dont know that much about the bulbs other than each tube produces 2800 lumens and there two tubes in the fixture.

Here's a pic showing a pup from an outside grown bridgesii (full sun), and one grown under the tubes (on the left).

Those really do look awesome for regular fluoros. How close do you bring the tubes?

Easter lily cactus, I forget what species of Echinopsis it is.

Blue myrtle with a droplet of water on it, me thinks it looks rather cool.:awedance:
