Quick Home Theater question..
    #11225419 - 10/11/09 08:20 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

I finally upgraded to a flatscreen HDTV and to my dismay the Comcast HD DVR box I have doesn't have HDMI input, but DVI.  Does DVI carry the same hi def signal (minus the sound)?  I'm forced to use A/V connection until Best Buy opens today.

I assume FIOS isn't available where you are.  In any event, you might try calling Comcast and bitching.  If you are paying for the service, the damn box should have HDMI output.

That being said, the DVI should carry the same digital info to the TV as HDMI, minus the sound.

Short answer: yes. It shouldn't make much if any difference in quality, they are both essentially the same.
Assuming it is DVI-I and carries both video and audio, HDMI is just the new standard they are trying to push.

Cool.  I just also realized my TV has VGA and not DVI.  Soooo  I need a DVI cable and a DVI to HDMI adapter.  Thank god for employee discounts and $3 cables.   Once my Dad gets home I'll get his info and call comcast to request an HDMI box instead.  Thanks chad.

Wel I got a DV-I I adapter to HDMI for my setup.  The comcast menus on demand are kinda smushed to 4:3 and if I change it it kind of warps.  The HD On demand is in full 720p but the regular stations are still knd of bocky.  Any suggestions?

It's been a bit since I had Comcast, and each provider is different...but in general:

Anything in HD, is going to take up the whole screen, and look "normal".  Anything in standard defintion (SD) is broadcast in the 4:3 ration.  Thus, to display SD content on an HD set, of two things has to happen:

1. the ends of the screen need to be chopped off (with bars).
2. The image needs to be "stretched" or distorted to fill the entire screen.

This is how I have my TV hooked up to my computer:  DVI-HDMI cable out from video card to the back of one of the TV's HDMI input.  Straight up 1080p computer monitor!

Love it.

You're doing it correctly and all the info talked about it correct too.

What exactly do you mean blocky?  And how big is the TV and how close are you standing to it?  :smirk:
