a couple newbie questions
    #1115093 - 12/05/02 06:52 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

I innoculated 12 pf tek jars 4 days ago. About 5 of the jars are showing bright white mycelium at the innoculation points, 4 are showing a lighter white at innoculation points, and the rest are showing no growth at all. First, when mycelium first appears, is it "light" white or is this cobwebs? Second, I've had trouble stabelizing the temperature of my incubaltion chamber. Because it obviously heats up during the day, the temps get up to about 87 degrees and then drop to about 82 at night. I'm gone all day so theres really not much I can do about this. Could this excess heat have dried out the jars which are not showing growth? If so, should I inject some sterylized water into these jars? I know, I know; I'm probably being impatient, but I wanted to run this past some people w/ experience just to make sure. Thanks

Your temps are perfect even if u cant stabilize it thats a very good range for incubation
Just be patient and you will reap the benefits when the time is right

>First, when mycelium first appears, is it "light" white or is this cobwebs?

will need a picture to determine.

>Because it obviously heats up during the day, the temps get up to about 87 degrees and then drop to about 82 at night. I'm gone all day so theres really not much I can do about this. Could this excess heat have dried out the jars which are not showing growth?

Maybe. 87 is a little higher than what it needs but shouldn't make a detrimental difference.

>If so, should I inject some sterylized water into these jars?
Sterilized. No, you'll increase your chance of contams greatly.

>I'm probably being impatient
yes you are, leave the jars alone and don't look at them for at least 3 days.

Not at all. As long as it wasn't exposed to this temp. for an extended period of time. I believe I've heard that 96 degrees is the official temperature that cooks the mycelium.

In reply to:

Sometimes mycelium starts out greyish and turns a vigorous white as the mycelium grows. In other words, you will be able to tell for sure in a couple of days.
