Habitat: This single large mushroom was found under a mix of deciduous and pine trees, the morning after a moderate night rain. The ground was covered in pine straw and moist.
Gills: Pores are white, tiny, and fairly dense.
Stem: The stem is about 5-6 inches in length, an inch in diameter, and a mixture of orange and black. The inside of the stem is quite tough and dense, white to off white in color.
Cap: The cap is very wavy, about 5 inches in diameter. The perimeter of the cap has a very thin dark orange to rusty brown line, like a very thin border about 1/4 of a cm.
Bruising: There is no bruising in either the cap or the stem.
Other information: Seems to be void of any smell somehow, lol. Never seen one like this, just a really cool shroom I would like to ID.

Was this growing from rotten wood perhaps?

Yeah it certainly could have been. It was hard to tell as everything was decomposed and wet, etc...

Polyporus badius seems pretty similar, but I can't find any images that are as light brown on the top as the specimen I found.

In any event, thanks for your opinion. I have no clue, just getting into this hobby.
Peace

Just keep at it. And get a good field guide.

Surely some kind soul can provide me a link to a modern field guide that is well regarded.
Yes, I know I can search for one myself on this forum or on google. I have done that, and rather than choose based on my own limited knowledge, I'll seek some advice.
Thanks,

I'll leave that to the North American members here, because the ones I rely on won't do you much good.

Further research on your suggestion indicates it is most likely Jahnoporus hirtus. The only issue is that I can not find any reference as to it's range. If it is present in the Atlanta, GA, USA area then I think we have a match.
