after i take my fully colonized cake out of its jar how much light should it be given and for how long? Also, what should the wattage of the light be and how far away should it be placed?

Think about the sun man. If you can just leave em by a window they will be cool. I would give more than 2 hours a day. Go for like 8. The shrooms need the light to tell em where to grow, but grow more in the dark hours. Good luck.

I believe eight hours is way overkill. An hour or two a day is all that's needed. I read that just a few seconds a day of the right spectrum is all thats needed for the shrooms to get their directions. I used to leave the light on for anywhere between 6-12 hours a day. I found that once I cut back the light to an hour or two, the shrooms seemed to grow faster. Maybe my imagination, but I rather think not.

I think there has been an argument on this topic before. For instance, it is said shrooms grow better in the dark. SO 2 hours a day will yeild bigger shrooms. I reccomend lots of light until they pin - 8 to ten hours. After that, I say cut back to 2 - 4 hours a day.

Actually, the mushrooms only need the light to know when to begin pinning. Gravity tells them where to grow....

Anno knows alot yes, but so do many of us here.
We don`t answer questions for nothing.
But I can understand your concern when users with absolutely no experience post misinformation.
I would go with 1-4 hours of light and then all the rest darkness.
I only give these times because I`ve experienced faster mushroom growth in darkness than in light.
They only need a bit of light for directional growth.
Other than that it`s not necessary to pump them with light.

Well, I personally let my setup get natural light, so it gets light by day, and no light in the night.
Now, many people have tried it, and only a couple of hours ( couple = a few hours... 2, 3, 4... ) seem to be enough, both for pinning, as also later for the direction of growth.
A longer light exposure doesn?t seem to hurt though.
So, to sum it up, use natural light where possible, and otherwise a fluorescent light for a couple of hours a day.
