Orwell vs. Huxley

Hey PD guys, I never post here, because I generally avoid politics, but I ran across this comic, and I would like to get some of your opinions on it.  PD seemed like the best place for it.

very interesting comic, and all I have to say is all of the above. I read 1984 but not brave new world, but it was crazy how remarkably similar 1984 felt to current society. Maybe we don't have thought police, but close enough to it if you ask me.

They are great fiction stories, and do have a great message.  But regardless, I dont think our current society is like either of those visions.

Well obviously [I think] they are hyperbolic exaggerations, but I think he makes an interesting point comparing the two.  I definitely don't think we are at either extreme there, but it sure seems like we are leaning to a more "Huxleyism" culture than "Orwellism"

You know i was actually annoyed at brave new world being called a dystopia.

1984 is possibly one of the most nightmarish scenarios i could imagine.
Brave New World (in some ways) is freakin awesome.

I'm gonna check out a brave new world because you posted this. It'll be the first non-spiritual work of fiction I've read in years.

seems like we exist in a combination of both their visions.

Listened to the audiobook version.

I'll agree with seuss here it seems like there is many mechanisms of control particularly in the US and other western nations that closely resembles both books. This likely has something to do with them being popular pieces of literature.

Both books are super-police state societies that seem to operate off of planned economies one being capitalist and the other being communist. Often the purpose of the 1984 control mechanisms is to force people to to be complicit and orderly to keep the society at conquest. The BNW control methods seem to be directed to economic outcomes.

I know that 1984 is supposed to be a dystopian model of the future SU, but what did Huxley draw his inspiration from?

i have read both books.

i too believe it is a combination of both. H in America today i would say Huxley is closer because the average american never has to be confronted with weapons or violence, however we do experience the psycological 'warfare' of entertainment, advertising and journalism everyday and i feel as though those that do not see it for what it is: a manipulation of opinion, will always seek truth where culture tells them.

i also wanted to add, the thing that hit closest to home to me in brave new world was 'soma'.  I see the idea of chemicals that can relieve depression, increase desire or relieve anxiety to be frightening. What emotion is real if it can be altered by a pill and when is happiness truly happiness? Because of this I do not pills of any kind.

Thank you for the interesting cartoon.
