Habitat: Under conifers growing in moss maybe on buried wood

Gills:
Color white, adnexed to free, close

Stem:
Length 7cm, diameter 1cm, color white bluish black bruising may have been part of coloring, texture scaly, hollow, fibrouse

Cap:
Diameter 2 - 2.5 cm, color tan brown, texture scales, bell shaped fibrouse veil
Spore print color:
dirt brown

Bruising:
looks to be bluish black

Other information:
Scent of the mushroom smelt fondly of cubinsis in the wild but at home clean crisp only slightly earthy I believe this to be some sort of Cortinarius sp.

This might be Inocybe calamistrata

Does it smell fishy at all?

I don't think it's a psilocybe if that's what you're thinking. All the psilocybes I've found have a purplish blackish spore print. I've never seen any dirt brown.

Inocybe calamistrata for sure, especially given the fish smell.  Probably toxic.

Its in the minor Psilocybe genus this species has been found to contain Psilocybin and be active in on more then one occasion, but has also been found to contain deadly amounts of the aminita toxin muscarine/muscamol and in some cases it also may contain other potentially harmfully alkaloids

Thanks again Alan. I may find someone to do extra tests on this guy knowing they are rare especially in there natural environment. we need to do more research on more of these specimens. i also have started a mycelium culture to help inoculate the back yard in hopes to see this beautiful mushroom again.

Paul Stamets:

"Recently I collected a lone specimen of I. calamistrata from an old-growth forest in the Staircase Wilderness region of the Olympic Mountains (Washington) and had it analyzed. The test came back negative, despite the teasing blue-blackening reaction at the base of the stem. I advise you to approach Inocybe calamistrata with caution, given these inconclusive analyses....

"With this genus, you are more likely to find one that is toxic before you find one that is psilocybin active or innocuous.

it should also be noted that i read while researching this species last year that the large, robust form known from the PNW may not actually fall under P. calamistrata proper.

i don't remember where i read that, but it may have been arora.

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

There is no minor Psilocybe genus.  Inocybe calamistrata is in the Inocybe genus.

I think that likely to be a false positive.

Quote:

No members of Inocybe contain muscamol.  Of the 700 known species, 690 contain muscarine, 4 are inactive and 6 contain psilocybin.  If I. calamistrata does not contain psilocybin, it is almost certain to contain muscarine.

I think he meant to say Minor Psilocybin Genera, meaning the few genera that sometimes contain psilocybin and psilocin; and sometimes amatoxins and phallotoxins. Such as Conocybe, Pluteus, Gymnopilus, and Inocybe.

I noticed that after I had posted.

But Psilocybe and psilocybin are not the same - in fact they will soon be mutually exclusive.

What do you mean?

Isn't Psilocybe a genus and psilocybin a chemical?

Yes.  And soon all of the Psilocybes that have psilocybin will get kicked out of Psilocybe, leaving only the inactive members.

Where ever Guzman puts them when he publishes his new monograph in a couple years.  Maybe Psychedelia or Weraroa.

Weraroa, eh? I didn't even attempt to pronounce the new name for Stropharia aurantiaca. I spent so much time learning to say aurantiaca.

Weraroa azurescens
Weraroa cyanescens
Weraroa baeocystis
Weraroa stuntzii

...just wanted to see what it would look like:smile:

cool article Alan
