incubation chamber ?

I've been searching for a box which will hold 12 1/2 pint jars for incubation purposes. Ideally, I'd like to find a non-transparent plastic container which is roughly the size that 12-packs of 1/2 pint Kerr jars are sold in (11'' x 14.5''). I would just use the cardboard box itself but would rather find something more sturdy and insulated. I have an 11'' x 12.5'' heating pad which I plan to put on the bottom of the chamber, set on low. What have u peops used or seen used for incubating 1/2 pint jars? thanks

Don't use a heating pad, it will dry out your jars and can pose as a fire hazard. Not cool at all. Build on of these: http://www.myco-tek.com/TEKs/Incubation.htm or http://www.fungifun.org/pf/incubator.htm
I use the cooler for my jars, and the rubbermaid for my casings.

I know that heating pads have a tendancy to dry out substrate. However, it seems that if I covered the heating pad with a damp cloth (heating pad to damp cloth to jars) this might provide more "wet heat" as opposed to dry heat. whatcha think?

Use regular rubbermaid or sterlite containers, they come in an infinite amount of sizes. In order to keep the temperature constant check out Anno's tek: http://www.fungifun.org/pf/incubator.htm

Here is what I caught my cat making. It will hold ywo 1/2 pint cases in there boxes.
That is an 18gal. Rubbermade stacked inside another. You could put your heating pad in the lower one possibly. I am using a 50W fish tank heater.

I use both, I think the cooler is better for my jars, well cause I don't have a lot of jars, and the cooler isn't big enough for my casings. The rubbermaids are good because they are big enough to hold many casings (I have huge rubbermaids, it think they're the 35 gal, the big, almost 4 foot long rubbermaids)

Same as any other incubator, 86 degrees. I just try to keep it in the mid 80's.

i understand, but the thermostat setting for the heater doesn't directly translate to the temp. of the incubation chamber- its obviosuly going to be cooler than the water, as some heat will be lost.

You just have to tinker with it. Find the setting on the heater that will maintain an acceptable temp.

Anno's Tek suggests that you keep the heater's temperature at 80 degrees. The mycelium in the jars will produce extra heat while colonizing.

im using a heating pad about the same dimensions as yours is, and i keep my jars at a nice 85 deg. its been plugged in for two weeks and unless there is a spark or something from the outlet, im not concerned at all about fire. The heating pad doesnt get hot enogh at all to cause one. Have a thermometer w/ a cord for recording outdoor temps, and put the cord in there at the bottom of the box. Needless to say, the heatingpad itself gets to over 100 deg., so I must layer it with about 5 inches of towels and t-shirts.... and thats my newb advice...
