I was thinking Amanita Rubescens.

Nice pictures, Amanita rubescens would be my guess as well.

maybe but i doubt it; the base is indistinct bulbous, and not muscarioid at all.

if it where, i would feel more comfortable leaning towards Section Amanita.

Thanks for that info, but could you explain what those terms meant?

in the Genus Amanita, the structure/form of the mushroom's intact base is critical for identification.

based on several generalized forms of basal structure / volva, you can determine which section of the Genus to place it in and limit the identification.

i posted this [from michael kuo's site] for somebody earlier, and it makes for a good starting point. though it's not all relevant to the identification of Muscarioid Amanitas [those within the Section [subgenus] Amanita], it is good to know.

you should at least know how to recognize both the form classic of the species you are interested in and that of the deadly species.

Looks like an Amanita rubescens to me.

Kuo says the base can be indistinct to bulbous which matches my experiences in the field.

i was referring to the A. pantherina comment.

rubescens [insofar as N. America can be considered to have this taxon] seems pretty likely, what with the bruising and what not.
