substitute for worm castings
    #10966697 - 08/30/09 02:46 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

i am doing a tub and my substrate is

65% coir
15% verm
10% gypsum
10% worm castings

buuuut i have called every nursery around and they said they dont have WC and they have no idea where i can get some around my area. also i have looked in all the stores and i cant find nothing.

what is a good sub for WC?

if there is nonw, can i just say screw the WC and just use the coir gypsum and verm?

thanks

I don't know of an exact substitute, but I know coir alone is a good substrate.

Spent coffee grounds worked well for me. The only worm castings ive ever found locally are the ones in my newly established worm bin, but its for my plants, not mush. Castings can be hard to find.

Go to the Hydroponics store, they will have worm castings.

substitute for worm castings

in your formula, 5% chicken poo + 5% coffee grinds could replace the EWC or even just 10% coffee grinds but if chicken poo is available keep it at or under 5%

Blood meal? I think they both boost nitrogen content of the soil.

Go with the spent grounds, WC has a total Nitrogen content of 1%> Only 0.1% is water soluble. I have used WC before and it doesn't seem too colonize very well. Coffee is way better IMO. Plus its cheaper.
