expressing the self with art. but not an artist
    #10963630 - 08/29/09 09:36 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Lately I have been thinking that I could better express certain feelings through art.  The only problem is that I have never attempted to create any art (other than photography, but that is recording rather than expression)

Where can a mid aged person start in art? I cant really afford any classes currently, so that is out of the question.

Wikipedia for history and inspiration, torrents for books and instructional videos on your chosen medium, youtube for technical tips.

thanks for the tips on where to get the info.  I do plan on obtaining it those ways.

I was looking for a starting point though.  I mean I was always into sports, etc..

painting seems expensive, but has great results.  it seems like it would be for someone more advanced with an "art" foundation established.

Charcoal drawings, seem like it would be cheap, but seems kinda dull.

and building a Romanesque marble stature of myself also seems expensive.lol

I really don't know where I should begin.

I always appreciated art, but never learned any of the technical parts of it.

Use what you have lying around your house. I'm sure you have a pencil or pen and some paper. I suggest you begin with pencil.

Begin by focusing on shape. Learn to find the shapes that compose your subject and define them on paper.

I do have a schethpad and some pencils.  I'll start with that I guess.  its not like throwing money at buying materials is going to make me learn.

thanks you two.  I guess I just need to jump in and do it, It should only get better with practice.

Shape seems like a good place to start.  I found a book to download about understanding perspective.  I'll start with that.

What you need to do is buy a sketchbook and start throwing ideas down on paper through what you want to express with your vision. Every artist has to have a vision or else the art being portrayed will seem shallow and fake. So, I mean, this is what I did, like 8 years ago I bought a sketchbook and started drawing concepts that I had in my head, and as I bought more sketchbooks I got better and better and getting my ideas across. Now, its no question. Gotta start somewhere. And like drawing, or welding, or snowboarding, anything worth doing takes practice. Also art books help a lot, thats how I learned how to draw humans which is quite necessary. So, yea, thats my suggestion. Good luck to ya.

start with a pencil for sure.

conceptart.org has a rather large community, so you can post your progress there and people will offer their observations, criticisms and tips. that'd be a great place to develop foundational drawing skills.

good luck.

im sorry but some of the people above me, although have good suggestions for people wanting to develop technical art/drawing/painting skills arent really helping you be EXPRESSIVE.
conceptart.org will not help you go into art for the reasons it seems like you want to.

you just wanna express emotion, go for some PAINT!!
do ABSTRACT.
get HUGE brushes, LOADS of colours and consistensies, go nuts!!
make shapes, splatters, anything you think looks good, if it doesnt look good just go over it!
bollocks to trying to learn to draw if you just want to be expressive.
fuck buying sketchbooks and canvases, use old bits of wood, opened and flattened cardboard boxes, anything!!
a square of corrugated cardboard was the 'brush' i used to do some of the most expressive and personally meaningful pieces i did during my whole foundation year.
one of the most important things you can do is not be precious about your work at all, if youre feeling something through creating it then its doing its job.
