a warrning about broadcom wifi for linux users
    #10945297 - 08/26/09 11:13 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

broadcom uses sub model numbers that can only be found by running "lspci -nn"
sub model numbers are never listed in the specs
computer stores will not allow you to boot from a dvd,cd or usb flash drive
so you will not be able to tell what brodcom card is in the computer
some of these are windows only you may not even be able to get who ever put that card in the computer to tell you what the name of the files the windoze drivers are in so a wrapper can be used to run them
the drivers downloaded from the OEMs are in .exe files and can't be extracted even by windows
so some of these are windows only
yes there is a kernel driver for broadcom BUT it dose not work for all broadcom cards
even for the ones that do work with it you need the firmware for that is veary hard to find (it's only on one web site)and it's almost bootleg because it was hex edited from a windoze driver

so if it says broadcom do not buy it
unless you can do without wifi

yep, broadcom basically eats shit.
and lenovos cheaper machines, can kiss my fucking ass as well.
i have a cheap lenovo that has a bios whitelist (purposefully crippled)
this fucking machine is crippled to only except ONE network card, only ONE
and its a broadcom.
yay!

even dell will not admit they use broadcom
so dell must already know what shit broad con is
just more prof that no one with a OEM discount can be counted on to do anything but try to block the use of linux
yea dell is putting linux on some computers but it's a toy distro they are putting on these machines
maybe they are trying to set the worst linux example they can
no one who has used any other distro would use that distro for more than a half hour

speaking of broadcom, remember this?

Quote:

Henry Nicholas, a co-founder of the chip company and chief executive from 1998 to 2003, was indicted on Thursday on charges of engaging in drugs violations, including spiking an industry executive’s drink with ecstasy. He was also indicted on charges of participating in a stock options backdating scheme, which forced a $2.2bn writedown at Broadcom.

Quote:

“In or around 2001, defendant Nicholas distributed and used controlled substances during a flight on a private plane between Orange County, California and Las Vegas, Nevada, causing marijuana smoke and fumes to enter the cockpit and requiring the pilot flying the plane to put on an oxygen mask.”

He also forced people to dig him underground orgy rooms under his house and threatened to kill them if they snitched.

Im ok with "modding" or "hacking" some off the shelf laptop....
if your using linux you probably already know how to replace wireless cards...
but in any case i would use a cisco-ish kind of card...
(linksys)...
they have always worked well for me....

i got a broadcom wifi card working on my gf's compaq presario v5000 on linux mint. did not even need to dive into the code, simply went to administration -> hardware drivers and activated it with a click. i know this may not be with all versions of the broadcom devices but i did spend hours trying to find the fix when i suddenly realized it could simply be turned on with a click.

there are a few that do with linux BUT they also use sub model numbers so there no way to tell if it's going to work with linux before you buy
IF you can boot to linux you can get the sub model with "lapci -nnn" no computer store will allow you to boot there computer from Your media other than that there is no way to get the sub model number that I know of
so it's just better to stay away from broadcom (because it may be a sub model that just not work with linux even with a wapper and a windoze driver) unless you can do with out wifi

sure with a desk top were talking built into a laptop
the freaking wireless card might be part of the MOTHER BOARD (dig it?)
IF you get a dell laptop you may need a usb wifi card hanging out the side to get broken off

one wifi card I can recommend it athrous they opend up the drivers now theres a  kernel module that works better than the windoze driver dose longer range and faster at low signal strength

wifi cards in laptops are very seldom hard wired to the motherboard. Most are as easy to replace as taking a few screws off.
