Drying Question: Cracker Dry?
    #10921490 - 08/23/09 05:45 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Hey folks,

Yes, I know that cracker dry means cracker dry.  I just harvested my first flush and I put them in the dehydrator for about 12 hours.  The main part of the stems and the caps are definitely cracker dry.  But the base of each shroom can still be squished slightly.  The bases are quite large.  I let them dry for about 8-9 hours and I checked the bases to see how dry they were.  They still could be squished a little.  I left them in there for another 3-4 hours or so and the bases didn't change much in terms of their squish.  They aren't wet squishy, just they can be compressed a little.  Is this the nature of the stem bases?  Do I need to toss them in the dehydrator for a little more time?

It almost cracker dry---- the stem has to snap.. give it another go in the dehydrator ... Its better to be safe then sorry.... It'll last longer.

They're fine to go ahead and eat, even if you wait a week or two. But if you're storing them, they have to be cracker-crisp dry or they'll rot.

Cut the stems lengthwise and they should dry out real nice.

Might possibly want to buy some desiccant, that seems to always finish it off for me when I have this issue.

Alright, I picked up some desiccant.  Damp-rid it is called.  Is that the proper brand?  I just put the mushies into some large zip locs.  I then put the smaller zip loc full of damp-rid into the larger zip loc.  The smaller zip loc is open.  The larger zip loc is closed with most of the air released.

Will this be adequate and for how long should they be allowed to sit with the damp-rid?

It is interesting.  Almost all of the mushies are cracker dry, except for the base.  I flattened the base of one with my fingers and it was almost cracker dry.  So close, but maybe a little moisture.
