Early pin problem
    #10913700 - 08/22/09 04:44 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

What should I do with a cake that has begun to pin of which the entire surface area has be colonized but has only been so for a day or two? I'm pretty sure it's not colonized 100% throughout the entire jar yet. Problem is I would have to remove some of the colonized part to check the inside.

You don't want to cut your cake up just to check if it is colonized.  If it is pinning already, it is possible that it is 100% colonized.  Pinning is triggered by complete colonization.

birth the jar. put it into fruiting conditions. if it is fully colonized on the outside then it is also fully colonized on the inside. you dont need to break it apart and check inside, that would be ridiculous.

Not entirely true, I have a monotub that was only 60% colonized and it pinned and flushed, I got over 200g off of the first flush.

If you see 100% surface colonization and you have pins, then birth.

For learning purposes, know that if a contamination got to some of your substrate, the mycelium will "think" that it's 100% colonized because it's colonized all of the substrate that was available to it.  This is why often times you'll see people have a jar that's half colonized but has pins.  The reason is that the mycelium is going into fruiting mode, trying to reproduce before it's fucked...  More or less.

Good luck, I hope it works out for ya

Thanks guys, I just didn't want to throw it in the FC with the inside possible not being colonized and it get contaminated. If I still suspect it not being 100%, it would be better to put directly in the FC instead of dunking and rolling then just dunk and roll after its 1st flush?
