Liquid Stirrer Electronics Question
    #10870066 - 08/16/09 12:27 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

So I am trying to make a liquid stirrer but am running into some electronics issues. I chose a fan to pirate the parts from that way I wouldn't need to mod the adapter and can just plug it in. This same fan came with a switch to turn it on high medium and low so this avoids my need of trying to pirate a potentiometer from sumthin. Anyways I hook it up and can only get it to work on one speed which is high (in pic it is actively working and switch is on high.) The middle turns it off and that feature works just fine but if I turn it on low nothing happens.

I was going to just say fuggit but then I read postings from some trusted cultivators saying they generally use lower speeds. I'm sure someone with any electrical knowledge could solve this.

you really need to use the  potentiometer  to make it go to lower speeds i dont think it will go lower with a switch a cheap method of a  potentiometer  for it would to go to home depot and get one of those dimming light switches i have seen a friend use one before or you can get one at radio shack

It might be overkill but I used a household dimmer switch.  Trying to make sure nothing flamed!

Drilled some holes to keep it cool

Can't tell from your pic but it looks like your missing or not using one of the taps on you switch?

Yep, stir an LC. It helps aerate the liquid and stimulate mycelium. Also helps to break it up so that you can aspirate it easier.

IMO Computer fans are not the way to go. I've built a few and the PC fans have the worst speed control of all.

Drumjam, nice stirrer, is that a 24vDC or 110vAC fan?

That works too =]
Stir bars give a nice even stir, and I'm listening to one stir as we post! Quite relaxing.

110v and the speed control is good just slow to start up.

As far as using a stir plate, ease, no liquid gets any where close to the filters, injection port, and oh yea, it works well too.

I can grow mushie, the story is, I enjoy trying.  Half the fun is tinkering with this stuff.  One or two project once in a while make for a lot of very fun equipment.

As far as the hobby goes.....You don't need a stir plate...But their fun to watch!

Does the 110v fan get slow enough to do proper stirring without vortexing the liquid?

I built one with a (12v) computer fan and was very dissatisfied with the min-max speed variation. It was either FAST or REALLY FAST stirring. If you use a DC motor with a gear or two, you can really dial the speed in just how you want it.

It will go slow and will produce a vortex.  I use it on high for short periods to break up clumps.

Great. I know what my fourth build is going to look like now.

I build everything, by the way.

The only thing that is going unused is one cord on the ac adapter

I'm only guessing, but could that third wire tap be a middle voltage provided by the adapter??

That's quite possible. I don't know if it would just be easier to scrap the adapter and just strip the fan wires and hook to a potentiometer when I get a couple bucks. I also considered trying to use my dremel to cut the outer part of the metal attached to the magnet but I am not sure if it's overkill and would just suck the stirring device down to the base.

I think the potentiometer is the way to go.  Those fans are balance quite well I wouldn't screw with it.  I took great care and put additional mags on mine and reattached them until I got it right.
