Glowing mushrooms
    #10861462 - 08/14/09 07:51 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

I was looking at some spore vendors (from the sponsors here), and one of them purported to sell bioluminescent fungi. I was wondering how powerfully bioluminescent they are, I was thinking of having them as simple eerie decoration in my apartment. Anyone have an experience with these?

I'm going to assume you are speaking of the ghost mushroom.

While I've not grown them, I have also been interested in obtaining some spores. Done a bit of research on them and first of all THEY ARE POISONOUS. Don't buy them if you are thinking of eating em.

I've heard they can be a bit weak when it comes to glowing but if you train your eyes to see in the dark before you look at them, they will glow a lot more to the point where you can read by them.

Good luck and please let me know if you decide to grow these. I'd love to hear about how you grew them and if they are as cool as they sound.

Pan stipticus.  The mycelium glows green.  You don't even need to fruit them.  A jar of rye grains will be visible at night.  If you'll put citric juice such as lemon into the grains, they'll glow much brighter.

You won't see them glowing in the daytime.  They're not that bright.

I wonder if you could extract the glowyness from it and make organic glow sticks.

Estimated amount? Teaspoon of lemon juice per quart? Tablespoon?

A lot more than that.  Try to get the pH to about 3.5 to 4 and they'll glow pretty darned bright.  I've used sulfur for pH, but lemon or lime juice seems to work better.

Lime juice is more acidic than lemon. So using less lime juice than lemon juice would be a smart idea.

Would soaking the grains in lemon juice then adding a bit of horticultural lime to raise the pH up to 3-4 work? (Lemon juice has a pH of approx 2.3)

Favoriting this thread, thanks for the information...I'm even more interested that the mycelium is what glows, since it seems that could last much longer. I'll be experimenting with this in the future.

Vinegar is a lot cheaper then either of those- how's it going to do pHwise?

3.3. pH experiment
The pH value had a signi¢cant e¡ect on both mycelial
growth and bioluminescence of all four fungi. The optimum
pH for growth was pH 3.5 for A. mellea and
O. olearius, pH 3.5^4 for P. stipticus and pH 4 for
M. citricolor (Fig. 3). P. stipticus had the most limited
pH range, with poor mycelial growth at pH 4.5 and above.
Poor growth was observed at pH 6 and no growth was
observed at pH 7 for any of the fungi. A. mellea produced
rhizomorphs at pH 3.5 (after 18 days). Townsend found
that the pH range over which rhizomorphs developed was
3.6^8, with an optimum at pH 5.6 [14]. The optimum pH
for luminescence was pH 3 for O. olearius, pH 3.5 for
A. mellea and P. stipticus, and pH 5^6 for M. citricolor
(Fig. 3). Luminescence was poor at pH 5.5 and above for
A. mellea, O. olearius and P. stipticus but not for M. citricolor.
Bermudes et al. reported that P. stipticus had a bioluminescence
optimum of pH 3.8, with poor growth and
luminescence below pH 3.6 or above pH 4.4 and no
growth or luminescence at pH 6 or above [4].

The pH of vinegar is about the same as lemon juice. 2.3 for lemon and 2.4/2.5 for vinegar (5%).

Though the acid in vinegar is acetic acid and the acid in lemons is citric acid.

And the juices have other ingredients than just the acid which could help the fungus too. Or hurt.
Dang, now I have to do some experiments...

The mycelium can glow for a long time.

I have a small 500 ml flask of sawdust with P. stipticus mycelium and I was just looking at it about 2 days ago, because I was wondering if it was still glowing. Its been sitting in my closet for probably 2 years now, and still has a very faint glow in one spot (where there is a mycelial knot or maybe a deformed fb)

it glows for a long time. but the pins/blobs/fruits glow much more brightly IME.
