are these mushrooms? long white stalks
    #10851548 - 08/13/09 09:15 AM (14 years, 7 months ago)

i found them rising up in clumps out of dead leaves in a wooded area

they have long white stalks and what is best described as a "flower" at the end

inside the 'flower' reminds me of a daffodil in that it has a gray inner circle with some sort of orange ring around that

located in new hampshire

approx 5 or 6 inches tall?

They actually turn from pure white to red when they ripen, to black before dying very neat plant. Also if your finding those I noticed that MANY mushrooms grow in the general area

No, that would be lobster mushrooms (hypomyces lactiflorum). Indian pipes are apparently associated with trees, either mycorrhizal or parasitic or something in-between.

Indian Pipes are parasites on mushroom mycelium that is in a mycorrhizal relation with trees - so in effect, they are tree parasites, but they use the mushroom mycelium as an intermediary to get the nutrients. So they are a good indicator that mushrooms will be around.
