The Animals - "Girl Named Sandoz"
    #1080483 - 11/23/02 10:23 PM (21 years, 3 months ago)

Tonight Thor graciously downloaded me "Girl Named Sandoz" by The Animals. This is a pretty kick ass psychedelic song that I think is unheralded.

The title of the song is an indirect reference to LSD, which was first created in 1943 by Albert Hoffman of Sandoz Pharmaceutics in Bazil Switzerland. Obviously the record companies of the 60's(and today as well) didn't want their artists openly promoting psychedelic drugs, so the band had to make it sound like a love song in order for it to be released.

I probably like old 60's psychedelic music more than the average person, but I still think this song should get more credit, at least among psychonauts. Smashing Pumpkins covered the song on their album "Pisces Iscariot", but other than that you don't hear much about it.

Geocities wouldn't let me upload this, so I went out and got another website so that I could share it with you all. So click here to download an mp3 of "Girl Named Sandoz" by The Animals(2.84mb).

Enjoy and be sure and tell me what you think of the song.

Here's the lyrics........

In reply to:

Well I met a girl called Sandoz
And she taught me many, many things
Good things, very good things, sweet things

I met her one sunny morning
It was hot but the snow lay on the ground
Strange things, very strange things, my mind has wings

Sandoz, Sandoz who taught me love
Sandoz, Sandoz heavens above
They could all learn something from your mind
Yeah baby

She is very old
You may think she's young
One kiss from her
And you know your time has come

Good times, for all time, Sandoz
Sandoz
Sandoz

so the band had to make it sound like a love song in order for it to be released.

That was exactly the same thing that happened with "Good vibrations" by the beachboys LF......it was originally written as an ode to LSD, then on the advice of Van Dyke Parks, Brian Wilson was convinced to make it into a love song if he wanted it to get any airplay:

"She's given me good vibrations,
I'm picking up head citations"

Yeah, good point. I often wonder what the original lyrics would have been.

Did anyone download the song?

I have the Smashing Pumpkins version on cd and thought it was a good song but I think I prefer the original now.

I tried it, not really my jelly roll.

I find the old school psychadelic rock is best suited for people who don't use hallucinogens, it doesn't really say anything about them or transport you to a state of mind where you can understand them. It's typically like "Golly, trippin' sure is neato."

Yeah, good point. I often wonder what the original lyrics would have been.

Now there i can't help you LF, but it's interesting to note that Good Vibrations and Sandoz were out at exactly the same time(within weeks) of each other.

What date was that?

I know "Good Vibrations" came out on the "Smile" album in 1967. What album was "Girl Named Sandoz" on originally?
