What a difference dunking makes - update:)

Yow, the first undunked cake put out a single shroom, while the second cake, being dunked, has a dozen exploding pins, and another dozen 'lil ones emerging as well. So fellow newbs, Dunk, Dunk, Dunk!
Holy shit, this fuckin' cakes exploding!! There's maybe thirty shrooms comin' out now!!! Wish I had a digital camera - I don't think I've run across another cake I've seen posted with so much growth, one side in particular is highly productive, and there's several coming out of the top too....one of the ones on the side is growing upside down, though , pretty much heading towards the perlite...just a little confused shroom, I guess.

I believe it makes a difference. I did the same on my first grow. We birthed four cakes, two were dunked and two were not. The difference was definately noticeable almost immediately. If you're just gonna sit your cakes in a terrarium, dunking is the shizznat. Of course casing is a whole other level........

I was wondering: my cakes have been in my terrarium since monday and I already have between 3 to 10 pins per cakes and the longest pin is about an inch long, is it too late to dunk?

Yes it is. Dunk them after the first flush.

After i have cased my cakes and the mycelium is just at the surface can i dunk the whole casing by putting it into the fridge for 24 hours?

Are you talking about dunking or cold shocking? Dunking a casing is most definately NOT a good idea. As for cold shocking, I suppose it would work, not sure if that's the right time to do it, though. Maybe someone with more experience will answer that for you.

So if you making a casing then you aren't supposed to dunk? Why is that? I'm a newbie so bare with me.

Well, cakes you can dunk by simply putting them, for example as I did, into the 1/2 pt. jars that they were colonized in, put in some mineral water, and set it in th efridge for 12 hours. I'm a little confused by your question....ok, i think i get it, you're wondering if you can dunk and then cut/crumble the cakes for casing purposes? Hmmmm, I don't see why not, but someone more experienced might have more insight into why that is or isn't recommended.

submerging a cake in water for a reasonable amount of time after it is fully colonized.

I don't know about that, I've never done it cause I thought it was bad as well, but I know that I have read of some pretty prominent people on this site that dunk their casings. So I wouldn't say its definately NOT a good idea, just one that you need to perfect before it is a good idea.

In all honesty, I think dunking and cold shocking are overrated. If you have your other steps, including substrate recipe, sterilization technique, and terrarium conditions down good, you can have just as good results with cakes without the need for dunking or cold shocking.

Why would you dunk a casing? The whole idea is to keep the casing layer moist, not saturated. I've never seen heard anyone say they've dunked the whole casing. You could dunk the substrate before casing, but not the whole casing after the casing layer has been applied.. Don't make sense in my opinion. Maybe I misunderstood the original question.

I made a huge batch of bulk substrate. After every flush i dunked it and got some HUGE fruits. Since i dunked it everytime, i cant tell you the difference, but i do know there were no bad effects at least. As far as a casing is concerned, i dont see why it would be any different. I mean with my bulk project, it was just a huge cake of poo, so why would you treat it any different than a pf style cake? Just my 2 cents.

I don't, so I can't tell you why, I was merely stateting that it must not be such a bad idea considering some of the people that have done it (in grow logs, etc.). I totally agree that it sounds like a lame idea, but I have heard good things from those that have done it correctly.

There is a difference between fruiting a cake or a bulk substrate by itself, and a casing. All I'm saying is it should be ok to dunk a cake or a bulk substrate, but not after it's been cased, unless for some reason you removed the casing layer, dunked, and then recased. Dunking a casing layer would make it a soggy mess and a rich environment for contamination. That's why most everybody will tell you to mist lightly and not get the casing layer too soggy. Just my opinion, though.

And now for my next newbie question. If I use a casing, do I still need to buy a humidifier? Or is it just one or the other? I understand that a casing is supposed to lock in humidity. Which one do you guys like to use? And is one "better" than the other?
